Are you proud to be an American?

Are you proud to be an American?

Me too. I like the ideals of this country, and I'm proud to be a product of those ideals. And when this country fails to live up to those ideas, I want to help it get back on the path, rather than wash my hands of it. I'm proud to be American.

I am about to give up on this country TBH. I think both parties have ran it into the ground and the way it looks, they won't be turning it around anytime soon. Instead, I see them wage war on the wrong things. They aren't going back to our nation's principles, they are going back to their party's principles.

yes...because only the liberal can be ashamed of that which he loves.

1) Not being proud does not mean being ashamed.

2) Loving something does not mean that one has to be proud of it. I love America the same way I love Big Macs. They're both ****ing awesome. Should I be proud of Big Macs?

As I would say, "at your service with my compliments", and yes I proud to be American.

Don't bother with that one, he wont understand you.

Though the comparison between fast food and the nation would understandably upset many.

that's a stupid analogy.....unless of course you are what you eat, as the old saying goes.

bad anology...point still stands. Me being proud to be an American makes about as much sense as being proud of my gender, my race, my heterosexuality. Loving and being proud of something are two different things. That's the primary distinction between patriotism and nationalism. Not being proud of something does not entail not loving it, nor does it imply being ashamed.

No. I'm proud of certain things I personally have accomplished, but I take no credit for the accomplishments made by other Americans.

yes. i understand that people in contemporary society are being indoctrinated to feel less pride in life.
the lack of ego and arrogance in a society makes it more manageable, in regards to government corruption and control
being able to manipulate the masses into a form of servitude.
you brought up fast food....but let's look at a different analogy. take sports, for instance. i'm from indy, so i'll use the colts
for my example.
if the members of the colts roster don't take pride in their team, wouldn't you agree that this would negatively
effect their performance on the field?

Yeah, of course...that doesn't take away from the fact that sports fandom is an inherently irrational enterprise.

it doesn't matter about the fans, i'm referring to the team. and i think this lack of pride in our nation, which is kind of like a "team" at
the global level, has a negative impact on the country itself. if the people in this country don't take pride in it? we're just going to keep losing
because no one gives a **** enough to emotionally invest in it's positive future.

Disagree. People who don't feel "pride" in their country can still love it and invest in it emotionally. After all, we live here, we have an interest in making it a better place for us and our children and grandchildren. Rationally speaking, I believe pride is an emotion that should be reserved for personal, or small team/group accomplishments.

what it implies is the dullard mentality of mediocrity. it's shame in the passive-aggressive form.
No, it's not. I am neither proud nor ashamed of my left arm. Lack of pride does not denote shame.

lack of pride is actually worse than shame. at least shame motivates. the "lack of pride" simply stagnates, decays, and vanishes.

There's simply no point in being proud of something that doesn't warrant pride to begin with. For the vast majority of Americans, being an American is simply a result of circumstance. It is simply irrational to be proud of something that was handed to you from birth. Naturalized citizens, now they might have a better case.

human nature is based on ego. anyone who doesn't feel pride based on circumstance is in denial of his own nature.

That's just a stupid assertion. I don't deny being Asian, male, straight, American, a 21-year-old, or a Marylander.

I am proud, and lucky to be an American. So many opportunities are awarded to me simply because of where I was born.
