I know that everybody here has their differences and that we rarely all agree on something, but as it is, do you think that America is a wonderful country and are you proud to be an American?

I, for what it's worth, am proud to be an American.

I voted no just because it's my nationality, but I am not responsible for it personally. I am not ashamed of being an American... I just don't understand the concept of having pride in something that I am not responsible for. It's like asking me if I am proud I wear size 8 shoes.

Yes. Adjustments needed to be made, but I would be a God damned fool to not be proud of where I was from, where my relatives were from, what they did for the country, and how successive generations have instilled good values upon its people and myself. I am a proud nationalist, not a jingoist.

Honestly, I am more proud of being Southern born and bred, 6 generations. I more proud of that.

I am more proud of my local community too... I feel a closer connection to it, plus my family has had some impact on the community.

I don't have any more influence over where I was born than I do my race or gender.
There is absolutely NO reason to be proud of one's nationality. It's typically just an excuse for xenophobic nationalism, or used to justify wars of choice in order to "civilize" savage people in other countries.

I think I'd feel different if America was doing something that I am proud of, or had a I cause that I believe in and relate to... but nothing like that is going on, so America is just a country to me. It's where I live. I am not proud of my ethnicity, race, or anything else like that either...

The existence of people like you is one reason that I'm often ashamed to be an American. That's a ****ing disgusting mindset, and just confirms my view that many Americans are no more "civilized" than the Taliban, and they'd behave exactly the same way if given the chance.

That comment was a little disturbing... Imperialistic countries and war hungry nations have never really reached their goals planned either, but I guess history is lost on some people.

Well, it was a well intended comment - lews is a fascist and a racist. But still I am proud to be an American.

and people like you are why i'm sometimes ashamed of this country. the effeminate male had taken that such as pride and honor
and traded it for nanny state security and socialism. people like you are a disgrace to not only human nature, but to our civilization
and culture as a sum total. you are why this country is dying.

There is no pride or honor in conquest and slaughter, if you need to hurt people to feel manly you're a sick individual.

I am incredibly proud to be an American. I am proud of the warriors and philosophers who recognized every man and woman's God given right to be free, and for those who since then have kept us that way. I am humbled by the opportunity to maintain that trust. I am proud to be identified with this nation. I am proud of the beauty our nation has been given by God and I am proud of my little slice of the American dream and the work, by God's help, that I have put into it.

there is pride and honor in progress. and if war is the avenue taken which initiates that progress....then so be it.

Good or bad I am proud to be an American.

The ends don't justify the means either, you speak the justifications of evil men sir.

Me too. I like the ideals of this country, and I'm proud to be a product of those ideals. And when this country fails to live up to those ideas, I want to help it get back on the path, rather than wash my hands of it. I'm proud to be American.

I'm neither proud nor ashamed. It is what it is. That said, I'm happy as hell that I was born here.

Those who don't Love America don't know what it stands for of the Sacrifices by others that give you the right to think what and want and express it any time you want.

Our young and sometimes not so old fought ans many have died to keep a dream alive, and no it's not perfect, Winston Churchill once said “democracy is the worst form of government, except for all the others”

Some in my Generation used to say: America, Love It or Leave It, I won't go that far. But I will say get an education before you protest or complain about something you can't begin to comprehend.

I'm not proud to be an American (because I am only an American by circumstance), but I am certainly grateful and happy to be one.

The subject of the thread is whether we're proud to be American...not whether we appreciate freedom of speech and democracy.

You can love America and acknowledge the sacrifices made for freedom without taking pride in it.

People have fought and died for our right to complain about our country. You are dishonoring their sacrifice by discouraging others from complaining about their country.

There's absolutely no sense in taking pride in which nation-state I happened to have been born in, a random quirk of circumstance, in which I had no part, whatsoever. While we're on the subject, nation-states are fundamentally illegitimate institutions, and, therefore, shouldn't exist.

Maybe you can but I have always been proud and maybe that's why worked to make it better if even in a small way, in public office.

I also never miss a vote in an effort to make a difference because I know everyone counts, and I have seen what can happen when good people do nothing. We end up with California I am not proud of, as I once was before the State went from #1 to 49 in education and in other areas as well.
