Disagree. We just don't need extreme people. Having some faith and morals is not too bad

I honestly don't know, so I won't choose either, but I recall someone saying something like, if God did not exist, man would have invented Him anyway.

Religion is just a part of how we understand the world and how it works. To remove it is to limit our understanding.

I think we're better off with it. (and this view, here, reflects a change of my opinion on this over the years since I joined this forum)

Religion goes horribly sour and festers into a negativity when the people involved in it twist it for their own purposes: government, leadership, control, depotism, demagogery, bigotry and so forth.

These things happen - not because of religion or spirtuality itself - but becaues of the people who abuse it - wielding it like a weapon.

It's always either Shakespeare or Voltaire, it seems.

If God did not exist, it would be necessary to invent him. ~Voltaire

A world without any sort of spiritual belief would be imaginary only. If people didn't have religion, they would have faith in other things, whether they be political ideology, science, something else.

The world would be substantially better off if we could shrug off these primitive superstitions.

Couldn't agree more. At the risk of derailing the thread, many cons believe that government is the religion of the secular left. I think it's true.

To a certain degree, I suppose. Many liberals, including yours truly, often view government as "problem-solver of the first resort." I guess you could say that's a sort of faith.

"First resort" is key, and I do, yes.

Absolutely better off without it. Religion is the most common source of dogma, with an ugly history from start to finish of suppressing people, war, and any other sort of destruction one can imagine. It is also the main impediment to science and discovery of the real world we live in, which is more incredible than any religion I have ever heard of.

In fact, I'd like to see dogma go away completely, no matter from whence it came - religion, radical government, cults, whatever.

Im not saying religion is bad but if there was no religion, yes i do think the world would be a better place. We would have less restrictions holding us down as humans.

There is nothing wrong with a true Religion, the faults come into play when people make some of them into Cults by radicalizing them and twisting basic precepts into radical notions.

Much of this comes by way of people trying to take the Bible as the literal word of God and do there best to live by what are the words and interpretations of other men who in many, many are talking in metaphors meant to make one stop and think before acting.

The same is true in other religions as well.

As to Religion having am important roll to play in life. That is up to the individual.

We all know that God played a Central part in the creation of America.

Twenty one of the major Religions of the World have the same Golden Rule with minor variations in wording.

"Do unto others as you would others do unto you."

Amazing because as I always say if we all could live by these simple words the world would change into a Paradise greater than it is, over night, and God isn't mentioned.

Religion gives many people a purpose in life. I don't see the world better off by depriving them of that.

I dont think we should deprive them.
I just think lets say the idea of religion was never implanted into the human mind then i think the world would be a better place.
I mean realistically yea there will always be religion and what not and they have the right to follow whatever thing they call god but you get me?

This question keeps coming up again and again and again.

And I'll always have the same answer.

If not religion, we'd find something else to fight about, at least it leads SOME people to do really amazing things, mother Teresa is one example, and to be honest, I do have a great respect for people with faith (that don't misuse that faith) and yes it leads others to be ignorant or violent or homophobic based on the societal attitudes of a book written in the desert 2000 years ago by PEOPLE claiming to be the direct word of god but other then that, as I said before. We'd find something else to fight about.

That's the word, I stick to it.

I disagree. The world would not be substantially different without religion.

Religion is a very human thing, and showcases all of our qualities, both good and bad. Those qualities would still exist without it.

Unfortunately, it's a false purpose. Depriving people of delusion isn't deprivation, it's reality. Just because some people are too weak-minded to actually deal with reality doesn't mean they shouldn't be required to.

I actually disagree. If we didn't have religion, we'd have something else. The Soviet Union was technically atheist, but they replaced religion with the worship of the state. Sure, it'd be nice if we could ditch faith entirely and all be completely rational, but that's not gonna happen.

If you could magically make religion disappear people would find something to worship it seems to be hardwired into our DNA. Many people who don’t believe in god find something or someone else to glom onto. Money, people or ideas, like global warming for instance or earth worship or Obama as a savior.

I don't think it would be much different than things are now.
