Cats refuse to connect and are extraordinarily annoying when you want them to leave you alone. Dogs have more respect than that. They also have far more social skills.

Your description of cats is nothing at all like my experiences. I think the problem is with you.

So I've noticed a casual link in my life between "dog people" being conservative, and "cat people" being liberal. I thought I'd put it up for a vote.

I'm sorry if there isn't something that describes you - I'm just trying to keep it relatively simple to prove or disprove my basic premise.

I'm a cat person, and a liberal. I like dogs well enough, I just prefer cats for myself.

LOL - I'm a centrist and I prefer both.

I hate this poll.

and I'm a cat person.

They aren't if you respect them. My cat cuddles me when I'm upset, and has actually tried to attack an intruder into my home. She's tiny (7 pounds full-grown) so obviously she didn't get very far, but it's the thought that counts.

Maybe you just don't understand cats. ;)

No, I've had experiences with several cats. They are all the same. No social skills, annoying, not connectable. And I'm not hearing anything different from those who like cats. Independent is just "catspeak" for no social skills.

No, I understand cats. And with that understanding, I don't like them.

I never had a cat alone, that is, without a dog also in the house. I wonder if the more extroverted nature of dogs makes the cats less sociable.

Probably depends on the cat. She's spent most of her life a lone-pet, but she has lived with a dog before. He was a huge Belgian Shepard. Beautiful, sweet dog. They were great friends, and she used to try to play-fight him. It was rather funny, watching this tiny perpetual kitten try to take on a 70-pound dog. He would just gently roll her across the floor.

She's always been a very social cat, though. She really likes interacting with anything and everything... when it suits her, of course. But she's probably a little more extroverted than most cats.

Or at least, she used to be. Now she's a crotchety old lady. Reminds me of my grandma. "I'm old, deal with it!!"

When I had surgery on my neck, my cat spent the next week constantly in reach, usually curled up next to me in bed, purring. She knew I was hurting and did her part to try and make me feel better. This is normal behavior for a cat. Independent means if you have to go away for the day, the cat tolerates it and does not spaz out like a dog does.

I think a lot of this disconnect has to do with the fact that cats communicate differently than dogs or humans (which I grant may be closer on the spectrum of HOW they communicate).

For example, you know that thing cats do where they stand on your chest and knead into you, sometimes with their claws catching you a bit? They're not trying to be annoying. They're not trying to "tenderize" you. They're trying to stimulate your heart.

Cats will do this sometimes when you're upset or in pain and they're not sure why - they'll try to stimulate your heart. They do this to their kittens when they're scared, to normalize their heart rhythm and help them calm down.

Head-butting is also a sign of great affection for a cat. They try to crawl into you, with their heads. It can be a bit weird and frustrating until you figure out why they're doing it.

It's a greater gap to bridge with cats, but they are every bit as loving as a dog if you know how to read them. And they're way less dependent, which makes it a more equal relationship. I think of cats as being like a friendship, and dogs as being like parent-child.

Mostly conservative. I like both. Personally I prefer cats, though I acknowlege that dogs are actually more useful.

I lean liberal and I'm more of a dog person than a cat person. I don't hate cats though.

One of the cats here is a big head butter. He can spend hours butting his head against me and rubbing against my chin. He is also one of those cats that bites at you gently, which is the kitty equivalent of kissing.

I don't know. I once rented a house that drew a wiley rodent. When all else failed, I brought in a cat.

I'm an Independent, and I love both! I've had dogs and cats all my life, and loved them all equally. I only have cats now because I'm too ill to give a frisky pup the exercise and attention it needs. :(

The only thing cats are good for are ground up and put in dog food.
Not true. They also make for some excellent target practice.

Little bastards can run like hell if you just get close with the first shot. Makes succeeding shots more of a challenge. ;)

Interesting. So far there doesn't seem to be any correlation between liberalism and preference for dogs or cats, but a strong correlation between conservatism and preferring dogs.

But it's not a big enough sample size to judge yet. More votes!

Cons are traditionalists. Dogs are the very symbol of fidelity, home and hearth.

Dogs only spaz out if you don't take care of them well. My dog NEVER spazes and easily tolerates people being away for a long time. And, unlike cats, is always glad to see us when we get home.

I forgot about that.

I'm conservative, in the true sense of the word, and while I do probably prefer dogs, I have and like both.

I'm independent on my political views (far right on some, far left on others, a little right on some, a little left on others, sometimes outside both boxes).

I like fluffy cats with long tails and really big dogs. Plan on getting a couple of big dogs and 1 or 2 cats once we get out of military housing.

That's because the cat's waiting for you to die so it can eat you.

i love dogs.

some cats, not so much.
