Well, the crowding of the ghouls who spent the last two decades ignoring the Space Shuttle around the final flights of the Americans manned space program is simply disgusting. As are their crocodile tears.

Flatly, if any of you have ever read the Thomas Wylde short story "Space Shuttle Crashes" (Far Frontiers, 1987) you will recognize the pathological, but unexpressed hope, that the Shuttle will present them one final disaster to entertain the mobs.

The question is, since the government's incompetence and this president's deliberate dismantling of the US manned space program, can the United States ever recover it's pre-eminent position as world leader in space exploration?

Biggest frontier ever. We need it bad.

Sucks, because I'll probably never get to go now.

I was hoping they'd get their heads out of their asses in time, but oh well.

At this particular point in time, there is little need for manned space exploration. Robots are far more suitable for the tasks we are capable of today. Money is better spent on getting a more practical surface to orbit mechanism for unmanned vehicles. That said, it is worth funding basic research like radiation shielding and advanced space drives which might make manned exploration practical in the future.
 
I would prefer we explore space, but obviously we have more pressing problems. If there were a reason to explore, it would be for energy resources. I think we've indetified there is nothing close enough to justify more eploration based upon present technology.

Actually there is one other frontier that hasn't been studied completely, the ocean.
