If local laws permitted, would you report traffic violations to the police?

Would you report traffic violations to the police?

  • Yes, but only if I received compensation

Yes, if they were actually likely to cause an accident or hurt someone.

Laws in different places, of course differ, but if your local jurisdiction allowed reporting traffic violations to the police where the offender would be issued a ticket, would you do it?

Depends, a lot of traffic laws are completely arbitrary or outright illogical.

Where someone is clearly reckless, I suppose I would, otherwise I wouldn't.

Edit: I would report every single person going under the speed limit.
It's so distasteful that they are not punished as equally, for being a vital component in creating car accidents, as those that supposedly speed.

Yeah, I would report the cop who was going 15 past the speed limit and cut across 3 lanes of interstate traffic without using his blinker  I would only report serious or major traffic violations. I would maybe report the guy who cuts everyone off without a blinker as well because well... He deserves a ticket.

How would you prove that with photographic evidence???

Examples? Parking on the corner of the road, for example, makes a lot of sense in an urban environment. Red lights? Obstructing crosswalks? Parking in traffic lanes? Wrong way on a one-way road? No helmet on children riding on a scooter? Any of those not make sense?

Video evidence can often show this too. Here, you can submit that to traffic police. I hate bus drivers who drive 5 cm off your rear bumber at 90 kph

Going under the speed limit is a traffic violation???

That's illegal???

If it isn't, it should be.
Going slower than the prevailing speed of the highway, is more dangerous than going faster than the speed limit.

Edit: It's the fact that old people drive incredibly slow and can be just as, if not more dangerous on the road than other people.
It was an exaggeration on how old people drive slow, but perceive everyone else as speed demons.

But it isn't... and many highways are multi-lane... want to drive faster, move into and stay in the faster lane...

Most of those are fine, except for the helmet thing and red lights.
Helmets, all depends on the speed of the rider, sometimes ok others meh.

Red lights are ****ty, now someone ignoring a red light when other traffic is present ok.
Ignoring a red light when all the lanes are empty, I don't care.

90 kph is like 60 mphs right?
Yea that's reckless.

Going under the speed limit is a traffic violation???

It most definitely should be.
Depending on the area, it is.

That works, in theory, except the inept morons that do not do that.

Never fails that on my every day commute to work, there is an idiot that doesn't understand, slow traffic keep right.

Doesn't even get into how 4 wheels have a hard time seeing 2 wheels, because they don't look.
Had to go into oncoming traffic once, to avoid being hit.

You know that last point results in some pretty nasty accidents. Red lights mean stop. Stop. You can't see everything, especially with some of the illegal parking of SUVs and trucks that obstruct sightlines...

Also, for helmets, if a person chooses not to wear a helmet, that is thier choice, but for CHILDREN, but a helmet on his/her head.

More like 55, but close enough...

Yea that's reckless.

And has resulted in some nasty, fatal accidents...

Which is why most places have laws in place for slower traffic to keep right. Too bad I rarely see it enforced...

How about idiot scooter riders going the wrong way on a narrow ONE-WAY road???

Most traffic laws are pretty logical and make sense... there are a small handful that are rather non-sensical, but that doesn't invalidate the rationale for the vast majority of them...

I'd do it if the offense represented a serious threat to public safety -- not a bull**** offense, like "ZOMG THAT GUIZE ON A FONE LOL" or "WTFLOLBBQ THEY NO SIGNAL." I'm talking about reckless driving when there isn't a cop around to see it.

So, you thinking riding a scooter while talking on the phone is safe???

I don't know how it is elsewhere, but here in New York there's an offense called Speed Not Reasonable or Prudent.

It's a fairly flexible, common-sense sort of rule. It can apply to the guy going beneath the limit but too fast for road conditions as much as it does to the guy not going fast enough to avoid causing an accident.

Take a spin in LA and try doing the speed limit on the freeway when traffic isn't backed up -- sooner or later, a cop's going to find you and make it clear that you need to get a wiggle on ... or else.

Out in the sticks, when the roads are deserted and I've got a clear field, I'll blow a stop sign.

ETA: Forgot to mention I only do that at night.

No, most traffic offenses are little more than a tax on drivers and are only viable due to the evisceration of the fourth amendment in the last fifty years. Genuine safety threats, like drunk driving, needs to be taken care of. Ticketing someone for parking on the wrong side of the street is absurd. Even more absurd... parking facing the wrong way.

I agree with your statement on parking issues, however I would add that when somebody parks within 10 feet of an intersection it is not only annoying, but can be incredibly unsafe. In my dad's neighborhood the asshole at the end of the street leading onto the main roadway will park with his car right at the edge of the road. You can't see anything coming from the left and basically have to guess whether or not it's safe to go...or pull into the roadway to see around him.

Assuming the sight line is clear and there is no traffic, I really don't care or when one is stopped at a red light, with absolutely no traffic, proceeding should be fine.

I'd prefer more traffic lights be replaced with stop signs.
So many lights are poorly timed and don't correctly control the flow of traffic.

Also, for helmets, if a person chooses not to wear a helmet, that is thier choice, but for CHILDREN, but a helmet on his/her head.

I live in a somewhat rural area, I see people with kids of ATV's all the time, without helmets, with their children in lap.
It's dumb but going a slow speed isn't a big deal, it's when they're on the road, going a fast speed where it turns to dumb.

It's practically never enforced around here.

That's true too, but I'm pretty sure that where you are, the scooter is the prime choice for transportation.
Around here, it's the opposite.

Some make sense, others do not.
The pedestrian has gotten an entitlement idea, because they are supposed to have the right of way, when they have he ability to respond and stop faster than a vehicle.

Doesn't work that way here.

There are lots of blue hairs cruising in the left lane, going under the speed limit, when the prevailing speed is about 10 mph above it.
They are mobile car accident causers.

At least where I live, most of the time, no parking zones make sense... either restricted at intersections (as you note) where they can interfere with sight-lines or at places where the road is too narrow for parking without interfering with the flow of traffic. Also, parking should not be allowed at fire hydrants or next to public utility facilities...
