Is there any use for humility in the West now?

By humility I mean what passes for humility now...the not speaking up....not standing up......not speaking truth to those who dont want to hear the truth because to do so is to make the willfully ignorant morons feel bad about themselves....it causes them to have "bad" emotions about their failure to learn.

I am firmly in the HELL NO! camp....as that sort of moronic behavior is why the West is dying.

We have forgotten the great nation that we were in the time of FDR, instead preferring the profiteering of the time of Reagan. Our fascination with money and protecting the rich instead of family and love of our fellow human is indeed killing us in our ego, greed, and pride.

FDR's critics who claimed up and down that his programs would weaken people and wreck America turned out to be arguably correct....but that is another thread....talk to me about humility please.

Do you have any use for it personally?

I seek humbleness every day (not always successfully), it is part of my walk with God.

This is a personal thing that has nothing to do with politics though, so I am not sure why the question.

But without it, how can you listen?

I disagree. Humility is require to quiet the mind enough that listening actually works.

I am Zen, that does not compute for me.... I listen extremely well and yet I have no humility at all, have not had any of that for many years.

It might have something to do with how Zennists have almost no ego.

Perhaps, but I suspect we are mostly having a difference in terminology. For me humility means that you let go of yourself a little bit, that which you call ego.

To be humble means to listen to the inner voice. If you are Christian and you ask God to speak to you, it is also useful in listening to that as well. For example, last night, my girlfriend and I were praying about a difficult situation with some stress my kids have over being stuck inside. We opened a random bible verse and it addressed the issue (sort of similar to a zen person might use the i-ching, depending on the type of zen discipline). If were not humble (letting go of myself, my frustration over the situation, my fear for my children, even my love for them a bit) and didn't let go of myself, be in the moment (as psychologists like to call it "presence") and just listen while humble, I would have missed this moment and the tool God was giving me.

At the end of the day, the human mind works how it works. This or that philosophy might hit on good techniques for unlocking that. We dress it up in different philosophies or whatever, but science is science in that regard. Presence, humility, zen, whatever you want to call it, is all the same thing. If we get the beta waves going, we tend to be better people in those moments. There are multiple ways to get there, chanting, singing, meditation, prayer, etc.

Plant a victory garden. It will give you daily lessons in humility.
 
In the East what we might call humility has to do with the condition of the Ego....is has nothing to do with some idiotic Prohibition on speaking the truth...and lets be clear....it is the lack of truth that is killing the West first and foremost.

It's very strange how the right can quote scripture from the Old Testament, but those same people never quote Jesus Christ. Isn't following 'Him' why they are referred to as 'Christians' in the first place.
