How are we a Christian Nation?

I was reading an article that suggested two contrary views of the United States: some argue our country is based on Enlightenment principles and others claim our nation is based on Christian principles. The Enlightenment principles such as democracy, a separation of powers and freedom of speech are obvious to me. But what are the examples of Christian principles?

I suppose, inasmuch as any western nation is to some extent based on christian principles, we are as well. It was the faith of those who first settled here, after all, as well as the faith of the many who came here later. So it is natural that it would have some formative impact.

Western culture in based on Christian values.

If you travel to China, India or Japan, you'll see a lot of differences. Their culture isn't based on Christian values.

    We are not.

We are a nation with a lot of Christians, to be sure, but we are not, and have never been, a Christian nation.

Utter ignorance. It's based on a lot of very influential pagans and those who rediscovered them and their works after centuries of supression by the RCC during the Enlightenment. It's also based on Jewish values.

Oh, add some native American influences on our founding fathers to spice it up a bit? Esp. with the Iriquois?

    We're good to go!

Hey, thanks for coming to my Ted Talk!

Not sure if you're serious or not, but there were a lot of Christians in ancient Rome and Greece. Constantine was the first Christian emperor of Rome, for example.

You realize there were zero Christians in Ancient Rome for the majority of its period it was growing and at its height right? Christians were on of the things that caused the downfall of Rome.

Wow. How old are you, have you ever studied history and do you know the origin of the word 'democracy'?

Other than perhaps Boetius, can you name a single Christian philosopher who stood on equal terms with Plato, Socrates, Aristotle, Heraclitus, Xeno, Pythagorus, Marcus Aurelius, either Pliny and on and on and on? And he's just a trifling, minor nobody.

Pfft. The Consolation of Philosophy indeed.

Can anyone name, give an example of, Christian values in this country?
