What it would take for me to believe in a god [W:73:222]

Re: What it would take for me to believe in a god

That's not an explanation. It's a cop-out. It's blind acquiescence to ideas and edicts that are immoral as hell.
I'm sorry if that's insulting or hurtful, but it is, unfortunately true.
This Jehovah either told man to commit murder, or he didn't. If he didn't, then how is it the written word of your Gawd says to commit murder?
Or has man 'perverted' these words?

I will ask you again...where does God directly tell anyone to commit murder?

Again...
1 Samuel 15:3 Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass.

NUMBERS 21:3 The Lord gave the Canaanites over to Israel, who "completely destroyed them and their towns."

NUMBERS 31:17-18 God commanded Moses to kill all of the male Midianite children and "kill every woman who has slept with a man, but save for yourselves every girl who has never slept with a man." The virgins were presumably raped. (NOTE: How could the soldiers know which women were virgins?)

You say you follow the Bible. This is from the Bible. What are we missing here?

Re: What it would take for me to believe in a god

Again...

You do realize those events in the Bible were concerning God's chosen people at that time, the Israelites? And there was a specific purpose for those events taking place...sanctifying God's name, for one, and preserving alive the lineage which Jesus was to come through...any person living today claiming such events are still to be carried out now are lying and twisting God's Word, plain and simple...all that ended when Jesus was born...

Gawd's 'chosen' people???
He 'chose' to command a certain group of people, to annihilate another group of people, so Jesus could be born?
And you are OK with this? Had you lived in those days, you too would have been murdered.
You're OK with that?

Re: What it would take for me to believe in a god

Have you nothing of value to add to the thread? Your end of the world fantasies are not relevant.

You know I had this supervisor back when I worked summers as a life guard. He had all these conspiracy theories and he believed the world was ending in a couple of months. I would listen to him and even ask him questions about these conspiracies (not mockingly) out of curiosity. I found it entertaining and quite intriguing. I couldn't explain why. My best guess is that I couldn't believe how much conviction he had in these "theroies." He was a smart man, but he believed these things.

I habe been talking with a few people lately that are former Jehovah's witnesses. People who were born in to that religion or converted at a young age.

I told them about this supervisor and asked if that sounds like a Jehovah's witness and they told me it was almost definite.

I tell you this, learning about these religions I really am starting to understand some of the bitterness expressed by formerly religious people.

Well, I am an active JW and I can tell you this man is full of malarkey with his conspiracies...no JW I know acts or talks like that so don't believe everything you are told from former JW's...the bitterness is real, the propaganda...not so much...they could not live up to the standards...

I'm sorry... belief that "the end is nigh" is a fundamental core belief expressed by JW propaganda. It seems to be a primary function of the watchtower.

We are in the last days, yes...the Bible points to that...conspiracy theories, no...the primary function of Jehovah's org. is to announce God's kingdom...it's printed right on the mag...

We are in the last days, yes
And have been since 1878. So I don't believe you.

It seems to be a particular psychosis of balkanized religious groups to believe the end is near.

The Watchtower organization lost credibility in the twenties I don't know why they didn't lose it after the first prediction of Doomsday was wrong.

Do bees search Hardy Bible Thumpers they seem to neglect a part of the Bible that talks about doomsday and when it will occur.

You make it sound like 140 years is an eternity to the Eternal God...lol...

A billion is nothing... so, why should I worry about 'end of days'? People have been grumbling about 'end of days' for as long as we have had civilization.

How convenient. You can always be wrong but because god is so ill defined you are never wrong...or your "leader" anyway.

My leader is Jesus Christ..so no, he is never wrong...

So the end of days can be said to have started the moment man evolved into its present form. In other words, its all going to end some day. But that is true because the sun will not last forever, not because some phony god will finally sh*t or get off the pot.

So the watchtower is... what exactly? They messed up many times. They must be the antithesis of Jesus since they are commonly wrong. Odd you'd belong to such an organization.

He promised to come back during the lifetime of his contemporaries. He was wrong about that.

This is the problem with religions and the followers there of.
The teachings themselves are blood thirsty in many cases, and when faced with this obvious shortcomings of these 'deities', most followers just stick their heads in the sand and pretend the exchange hasn't happened. I assume because the reality of the issue is so contradictory to their beliefs, that to face them would rock their beliefs completely.

People like to have their Gawds and deify other people. It makes them feel secure, and I'm good with that. But the 3 religions that came out of the ME, are by no means...nice...or morally sound in any way what-so-ever. These are the lies that are dragging our civilization toward a war of epic proportions. Each side claiming moral and religious superiority.

All in the name of the same fu%$ing GAWD!

You will not find any bloodthirsty believers among the group I belong to...we refuse to even go to war, out of fear of shedding another human's blood or fear of taking up arms against our brothers in other lands...we have no blood on our hands nor can we help what other so called Christians do...

Then...oddly enough...I salute you for at least having the rationality to identify some of the more abhorrent teachings that come from 'The Dirty 3'.
