Keeping the First Amendment in mind:

What kinds of things could another person speak/shout to/at you, that in your opinion, would "justify" a violent response?

I don't see where a violent response ever solved anything...if anything it promotes more violence...

What's the definition of a "threat" then?

Does a verbal threat of violence, without any actual physical violence, justify a violent response?

I don't think so if there's no actual physical violence...I would do my best to defuse the situation, not escalate it...

'Turn up the volume, this is my favorite Nickelback song!'

I don't tend to get over-emotional over silly insults thrown in my face. I'll likely just walk away and never talk to you again, if something you said bothered me.

justify is a tall order . . ..
not sure what keeping the first in mind has to do with it, you already cant physically threaten people and i think thats a pretty good line.

so this is just my personal opinion and NOT how i define hate speech though. any direct threats with a indication/knowledge/presentation of ability to carry out said threat I personally may respond with a violent response.

Two guys standing on my property with a torch and a gun stating they are going to rape my daughter, then kill us and burn down my hose very well could get a violent and physical response.

Some imbecile telling me to "go back to Africa, Greece, Ireland, France, England" will get laughed at

Some guy in a bar that i have already had words with or maybe a light physical confrontation shows me a gun or a knife and tells me he is going to kill me in the parking lot . . could get a violent and physical response.

No such thing. Freedom of expression is far more important than hurt feelings. People need to grow up.

Come on....lot's of guys get in fights over some other dude just "looking at them wrong".

Lot's of guys get into fights over something inappropriately said about their mother/wife/daughter.

Some guy makes a very sexually disgusting comment about your 8 year old daughter, and you'll just walk away?

Threats with along with an apparent ability and/or demonstrated intent to follow through.

Are you trying to stoke violence? I have never started a physical fight in my life.

Well I'm not a guy so yes, I would walk away...or more like run away...:bolt

Personally I have a knack for making total strangers who get out of line feel really bad about themselves.

"What the hell is wrong with you? You don't know who I am. For all you know I'm the best person you ever met and you're coming at me this way. What would your grandma think." Etc.

Remarkably effective.

"I'm going to kill you", maybe. That's about it.

Yup I've used similar tactics!

Justified? No. Understandable? Sometimes.

If you walk up to my wife and kids, who are Asian, and just start slinging racial slurs at them, I will make you bleed. Am I justified in breaking your nose for those comments? No. But it is a perfectly human and natural response. And I am sure a jury of my peers would take that into account when deliberating. :)

Words alone are not threatening. If, however, you threaten to kick my ass and have taken an aggressive posture that becomes a threat. If you then make a move I believe is indicative of you initiating a violent act then I will act against you...vigorously.

You sound like a Hillery, Obama supporter.

Come on....

There's a difference between

"What would cause you to..."

and

"What would justify..."

Cause you to doesn't preclude you from understanding and accepting that the violence is wrong even if you're going to do it.

Justify suggests that you feel the violence should be either morally and/or legally reasonable.

There's also a third portion here, which would be "understandable". I.E. you recognize it's wrong, you don't think it shouldn't be viewed as wrong, but at the same time you can fully understand why it took place and can sympathize with the action.

Finally, [inserts tongue in cheek] why are you just talking about guys? Are you stereotyping men as angry, violent individuals prone to getting into fights but somehow suggesting women couldn't be prone to violence? GOSH! ;)

I would say words alone (ie no additional action of any kind to give any sort of indication or context) would never create a "justified" instance to strike someone physically, though I'd say there are plenty of instances where I could say the action was "understandable".

Unless someone was getting in my face and personally threatening me and putting me in a position where I feel I need to defend myself then no words justify a violent response.

Two different questions, here. You're assuming I think hate speech would automatically be worthy of a violent response.

No words justify a violent response, period.
