Here's kind of a funny story for ya, with an interesting dilemma to boot.
As I'm sure some of you know, I've been training in Arizona with the Army for the last several months. I graduated from my course last Friday, and have spent the last week or so driving back across the country.
Well, last night, I was trying to kill the final leg of my trip from Louisiana to South Carolina. It was around 4 am, and I'd be driving for the last 6 hours or so. I was only about an hour and a half outside of Atlanta, but I could feel myself starting to doze off. I figured that I would catch some shut-eye at a rest stop before continuing on any further.
I pulled in, and started to get comfortable. Literally two minutes later, I see a figure approaching my car - A man, looking to be in his mid twenties or early thirties, with bushy blonde hair, blue eyes, and a giant blonde beard. He was well over 6 feet tall, and had a very athletic build. He was wearing a filthy hoody, shorts, and sneakers without socks. His hands were black with dirt.
He knocked on my window, and in a very deep voice (Western accent, maybe?), asked if I could give him a ride to Atlanta. In my sleep deprived, only half-coherent state, I told him "maybe," after I got some sleep. He said he was going to get his stuff and camp out on the sidewalk in front of my parking space until I woke up.
After he left, I sat there and thought about it for a minute, decided "HELL TO THE NO," and kept right on driving home. I felt like a bit of a douchebag in doing so, but there was just no way I was either letting that guy in my car, or sleeping with him waiting just outside my door.
Do you think that was rational, or needlessly paranoid? Would you have taken a chance on the "Hobo-Viking?"
Honestly, I might have, if I were feeling a bit more like myself, and knew I had some way of effectively defending myself if worse came to worse. I just didn't feel like the situation was strongly enough in my favor should the guy have proven to be a threat.
