First off let me say ALL answers are correct. Contrary to some on the internet, what gives one person peace is not to be nay-nayed by others. I started this thread because now that I am 60, retired, financially well off, and happily married to the right woman, what gives me peace and happiness is very different from what it was when I was 20, 30, 40, or 50.

Also what used to really grate on me I have learned to gaff off and ignore. These things change as we change.

OK, I will go first.

Things that give me peace:

1) Sitting in my backyard amongst the pine trees on the swing listening to the birds at the bird feeder.

2) The cool & peaceful quiet of the late night hours.

3) Shooting really tight groups after I have worked up a load. Matching powder charge, bullet type and weight, primer type, and clean cases. It is really fun to takes pics of the groups, the distance they were shot at, then brag to my buddies.

4) My cat snuggle time. He will never lay on me or flop in my lap, but he likes to be near me most of the time and is within arms reach. His favorite place is on the popup foot rest when I am on the couch.

Things that really grate on me.

1) SATURATION TV commercials. Where you are watching a show and they keep playing the same commercials over, and over, and over, and over again.

Hey, I am sick of hearing about the car you named "Brad", OK?

Why do I have to hear about the latest drug that came out? Shouldn't DOCTORS be your target audience? Docs hate it when their patients self-diagnose. " Hey, Doc, I think I need ZippyPlotsamial for this pain in my shoulder ".

I pay $9 a month for NetFlix...ZERO commercials
I pay $100 a month for cable, and the thing is loaded with millions of commercials.

2) Plastic bullcrap "cards" you get in your junk mail. Madison Avenue somehow thinks a plastic card sent to me will make me some kinda special and want to give them money. It does not. For me, Capitol One, AARP, Sudden Link, and AAA are the worst. I even started a collect of them several years ago. Did you know since moving to my new house since September 2014 I have received over 28 of them from Capitol One? Then again, their building is the tallest one in town, so there might be a connection. If I ever learn how to post pics here on this site, I will lay all of them out for everyone to see. There are at least 200 of them. More in the mail every day.

OK, your turn.....maybe what gives you peace could be passed on to some that need it.

Why is this post here?

Your mental onanisms are not an interest of philosophy. Educate yourself of what philosophy is.

The search for internal peace is very philosophical.

I share mine, and ask others to share what gives them internal peace.

I see no issues. What gives a person internal peace is a very BIG part of their philosophy, Mr. Buzzkillington.

However...MODS...if this is in the wrong place, could you please move it?

OK I'll play because it is an interesting question.

Peace:

1) Riding trains, preferably in a sleeper with a drink in my hand

2) the satisfaction of a job well done

3) watching my kids or pets play

4) walking my dog through the German Forests (American areas are very poorly kept in comparison, but I make do)

5) sitting at the window with a hot drink watching huge snowflakes fall straight down, no wind.

Annoying:

1) drivers who either cant or wont do what they are supposed to do on the road

2) TV networks which have the commercials play at a much higher volume than the show. I am pretty sure there is a law against this but it happens still

3) shows/movies/books that are advertised to be about an event in history but which are in reality a fantasy about an historical event, like the movie JFK.

4) people who misuse language on purpose in their manipulation attempts

5) victim worship..pretty much every part of our victim culture.

Hey there, Hawkeye, :2wave:

Technically the volume USED to be increased on commercials, but indeed, they DID make a law to forbid it.

So now, they increase the MODULATION % of commercials, which has the same effect. A louder volume than the show.

I have a holy Jahid against commercials anyway, and sometimes just turn the TV off if it gets too obnoxious, and retire to the man cave and fire up NetFlix.

I pretty much gave up TV, just as I gave up radio, because it got too annoying. And I REALLY liked radio long long ago (till the massive consolidations of the 80's/90's).

This should have probably been on my annoying list: Commercials that try to be annoying hoping that we remember the product, like my wife was driving and had the radio on and they say the phone number 7 times in 30 seconds. Sure I might remember the number if I want to but I decided 15 seconds in that I will never buy your product in retaliation for bringing crap into my day.

Why do you hate capitalism?

Why do you hate capitalism?

Pretty big hyperbole there. Comparing hating loud repetitious commercials to hating an entire economic system.

Try and not fall into that barrel you are reaching so way far down in, OK?

If I want any BAIT, I will drive to the bait store and get some.

Sing after me....If you're happy and you know it, SHAKE YOUR MEDS...

but please, don't let me keep you from making another MOOT point.

A thing that can get under my skin. People at a debate site really need look up the definitions of more of the words they use. First, words are interesting. Their power is fairly amazing. I really enjoy reading some of the folks here who are able, in their own ways, to make words come alive on the page. Some do it in precise, succinct ways, I truly admire those with such word thrift. Others are a bit more wordy but often very creative. There is a workable style for almost everyone, but many are just too lazy and want to, because the other person doesn't think the same way, call somebody else stupid, or a bigot, or...whatever....and yet never get around to proving that lazy assertion in any meaningful way.

I detest other drivers who put my life at risk, making decisions, like tailgating, that just, well, really really ruffles my feathers. Another, auto related, I hate working on cars. Too many scraped knuckles, banged noggins on something or other jutting in just the wrong direction to catch one real good.

I get [too] frustrated at the fact that nearly every time I try to plug something in my first attempt is invariably backwards or needs go the other way, the plug [USBs are notorious] 9 times out of ten just not going in... I call this getting pug flucked as it can be maddening. Worst is when you stick it in correctly the first time and, because of the idea that it will most often be wrong, if the plug doesnt go in smoothly I turn it around try to force it the other way...it still wont go in and I realize I just didnt give the first shot its proper chance.

I was not a feline or truly even pet kind of guy until I moved to Panama and folks here told me I needed a cat to keep snakes and rodents away [ my cats also do a good job at debugging my house of real bugs ]. And so I have gotten two kittens since coming to Panama. Those two guys bring me sOOOoooooo much enjoyment, watching them run around after each other, play fighting, discovering every little thing in and outside my house. Gives me great enjoyment and great peace.

Travel has been a great exlir during my life and has kept me interested in life, all things around us. Never an excuse to be bored, if you are bored its your own damn fault. Cooking and enjoying a good meal, eating out at a good restaurant, all bring me peace and enjoyment. Teaching, being around young adults in my classes, so much personality, so much vigor, so much fun. It was the adults in the system that drove me away, the cookie cutter mentality, the monolithic thought coming from on high was just too much and drove me away from something I enjoyed, truly enjoyed, doing. At the same time, they drove me here, and so I am thankful that they forced me to rethink my positioning and, wow, found out sometimes good can come from bad. Just in how you look at it.

By the way, moot is one of those words that most people do not really know the definition. Moot = adjective 1.open to discussion or debate; debatable; doubtful:a moot point. 2. of little or no practical value or meaning; purely academic. 3. Chiefly Law. not actual; theoretical; hypothetical. verb (used with object) 4.to present or introduce (any point, subject, project, etc.) for discussion. 5.to reduce or remove the practical significance of; make purely theoretical or academic. 6.Archaic. to argue (a case), especially in a mock court. noun 7.an assembly of the people in early England exercising political, administrative, and judicial powers. 8.an argument or discussion, especially of a hypothetical legal case. 9. Obsolete. a debate, argument, or discussion.

So it almost means the opposite of what most people believe, and as it actually means both, it is one of those confusing the situation words. Most do not seem to use it, any longer, to mean its primary definition #1, open to discussion or debate; debatable; but the majority of the times for most of the rest of the definitions, of little or no practical value or meaning.... So use is changing it, which I agree with, but its still a bad word choice, due to its conflicting meanings, generally.

Capitalism brought us all those channels AND netflix. Have not watched TV, except at hotels, for over 10 years. Netflix is a godsend. I, too, hate wasting my life with commercials but have also seen TV writing/acting improve with the competition since I was a kid when there were only 3 channels plus a PBS station. Even though there were some darn good shows back in the Golden Age of Television, Twilight Zone, Star Trek, Alfred Hitchcock Presents...So I get to watch all this on netflix, isn't capitalism great?
