Should parents be allowed to choose the sex of their baby?

Choosing baby's sex: Should parents be allowed to do it? - CNN.com

So, as the title asks? Should parents be allowed to choose the sex of their baby?

Is this too much like "playing god"?

If you could chose the sex of your baby, would you?

Should this be outlawed?

Me personally, I don't care. Do what you want. I don't freak out over the idea of this, nor do I find it offensive.

This seems to me to be a sly, sneaky way of getting to the corollary question and more honestly blunt question of "should parents be allowed to end a pregnancy based on the sex of a child"?

If the time comes where parents can predetermine the sex of their child, prior to conception, I would have zero objection to parents making such choices. However, no person who claims to support equality of the sexes could possibly condone the culling of offspring based on the sex of a child following conception.

:roll::doh

This thread is 100% NOT about abortion. For cripes sakes....

No, it's about making kids and then having them die in a labs cryofreeze or just dumping them out as waste if they're the wrong gender.

So yeah, it pretty much is.

Unless you are explicitly proposing some science fiction technology here, the only way to do this right now is to end up killing a lot of innocent kids who didn't happen to be the right gender.

Greetings, CJ. :2wave:

Where you been - I've missed you! I agree with your post, and as usual you have considered what might happen in the future based on today's thinking. It happened in China with their preference for male children to take care of their parents in their old age, and I suppose it could happen here. The problem is that there are now not enough females for the men to marry, which may be the reason they have changed their thinking to now allow two children per family, which logically should mean one male and one female.

Good afternoon Lady P,

I'm fine, but my computer had a heart attack and required open heart surgery and hospitalization for a few days, leaving me to ponder life without it. It's back home and good as new, so until the next crisis, you'll be stuck with my contributions to the site.

I can think of lots of cultures and religions that would love to have the ability to cull offspring based on sex. Can you imagine the ISIS types, who would likely only allow female offspring when there's a shortage of sex and work slaves in the collective. And then, as stated by others above, the Indians who value male children above female children for purely financial reasons.

I'll be long dead, but I suppose there will come a time when having children won't involve sexual activity or perhaps even human involvement and it will just be a matter of ordering through the Sears Catalogue the particular child "model" you want delivered and how many.

China is and was completely different. They had a ONE CHILD ONLY policy.

The USofA, and the rest of the world to my knowledge has no such thing.

Therefore comparing picking which sex your next baby is going to be is not even close to an apples to apples comparison to anything that relates to China.

Several groups were exempt from the policy. There were no limits on the number of children in ethnic minority families, and Han Chinese families with rural household registrations were allowed two children. In November, 2013 families where one parent was an only child were allowed to have two children.

Personal choice of the parents, no one else should be in the position to "allow" and "not allow" anyone else that choice.
