I try to avoid those crowds at all costs.

I do my own shopping as I need to going along during the year.

I'm done already for 2015.
 
Meh, cherry picked videos of the worst of the worst don't really mean much to me. It's the exception, not the rule.

And hence my Bah! Humbug!... Regardless of it's initial religious intent, which I don't adhere to, the consumerism has gotten so ridiculous. Haven't so much as recognized the day in about 2 decades. No gifts given or received, the kids and I celebrate our own holiday in June because back when they were in school, they'd have things bought for back to school, then Christmas (while I was married), then immediately it was their birthdays, as they were born only six days apart (yeah for family planning). So upon divorce from a family that worshipped, we quit celebrating Christmas and moved the extra gift day to the first day of summer so they'd have new fun stuff for the summer.

Did you watch the video? It is nothing more than people calmly waiting in line. Is that so terrible? I wouldn't do it now, but did when I was younger. Usually for concert tickets. :mrgreen:

Doesn't matter whether they're calm or not, it's the fact that Christmas has turned into something having nothing to do with anything but buying. There is no other real connection to it in the USA anymore. AND to make matters worse, most people though shopping for others, is really more concerned with what they are going to get, and if they don't get what they want,... there's always the week after Christmas to buy it for oneself. It's just societal mass shopping masturbation.

I think that is largely misperception on your part. Most people I know live for the joy of giving, and don't care much what they receive. :shrug: You realize it is still possible to genuinely celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ, AND, gift exchange, right?

Why is consumerism so terrible? People want a lot of the cool gadgetry and electronics they have out these days. What's wrong with that? It supports the economy.

I'm not saying there aren't people in the world like you describe, I just doubt they are the majority.

On a side note, my wife and I haven't exchanged Christmas gifts for years. I love not having to find the "perfect gift". :) We usually just buy a couple of small items for our grand daughters, and leave it at that.

So essentially in order to enjoy the holiday more, you've chosen to do nearly nothing consumerism-wise. If I was religious then we'd essentially be on the same page, just different degrees therein.

I don't think consumerism is bad, I do think the differences we find in Christmas consumerism compared to normal weekend consumerism bad.
