Ted Cruz: An Atheist 'Isn't Fit To Be' President

The irony is how often those of strong faith claim persecution of faith (usually Christianity)... by a minority.

That's not persecution. That's just some guy expressing an opinion. Now if he tries to legislate that opinion, he better start praying really hard to whatever deity he believes in, cuz he's gonna be in a world of hurt.

What I found ironic was how many times I've seen some atheists here say flat out that having religious beliefs makes one unfit to be doctors, presidents, etc.

May you never really have to live where "persecution" means more than a presidential candidate saying something you dislike. There is no persecution in the US, either for or against atheists, Christians, etc.

There is definitely atheist persecution. Several states have laws against atheists holding public office.

He will need really good hearing protection and lots of aspirin, from all the screaming that would occur.

Whether Cruz is right or wrong would require a long analysis of theism vs atheism with pro's and con's of each.

No it wouldn't. All you need to do is read the constitution that says "no religious test required". Cruz as private citizen(I don't believe he is one but that is another story all together) can vote for anyone for any reason he wants. But the fact that he said he wouldn't vote for an atheist is okay. what if he said he won't vote for blacks? Could you imagine the outrage?

We're not electing a pastor.
The president's religious views shouldn't matter, so long as he doesn't try to impose those views on the rest of us.

American Christians don't believe in secularism.

"There shall be no religious test" applies to those with no religion too... Imagine.

not according to these states

It's not atheist persecution ... it's bigotry, but it's not persecution. Two reasons.

For it to be persecution, Ted Cruz would have to be in an actionable position of authority, which he's not, as his current title is basically limited to Senator Blowhard from Texas.

Secondly the wind coming from gasbag Mr. Christianity himself hardly quantifies when it's compared to the persecution that secular people face in Asia, Africa and South America.

True but the persecution atheists face in first world is much greater than the one Christians claim they face because people say "happy holidays" instead of "merry christmas"

American Christians don't believe in secularism.

That's much like saying that Muslims want to destroy the Great Satan.

A small, radical group of American Christians don't believe in secularism.

I agree. An atheist isn't fit to be president. There is a God and if the atheists don't have the spiritual acumen to understand God's ways then they most likely will lead the U.S. in the wrong direction. It's bad enough Obama thinks he is a Christian, but by virtue of his rotten fruits his Christianity is in serious doubt.

So persecution by the War on Christmas cabal is ok so long as it's mild?

Is that really something you hear often? Cause I doubt it. I could see someone saying something like "if your religious belief interferes with your job, then you are unfit" but just having religious beliefs making you unfit? I can't imagine any reasonable atheist saying that.
