There is only one meaning to life.

Respect authority, obey authority, or be hurt and left out in the cold to starve.

That is all life is.

nothing more.

Carry on.

Why the hell would you say this is the meaning to life?

Yes, surely we will carry on.

Respect authority because it is only through order that billions of people can survive.
Obey authority because failure to do so will result in unpleasant consequences.
Add one more . . .
Pray you are born in a free society (like the U.S.) where you have a voice IN that authority.

Carry on.

The united States is not a free society and we do not have a voice in our government any more.

Hm. There's this, and then there's your diatribe about government only there for power and supremacy...

...what happened? Did you get fired from your government job, or got screwed over by a government worker? And don't think I'm gloating - I make no assumptions one way or the other. I've seen a few friends wrongly discharged from the Navy, and my wife and myself just got screwed over royally (and very wrongly) by the state government (long, long story which I won't repeat here)...but we refuse to be bitter about it - she and I have each other...

...so here's a bit of advice: count your blessings.

Why? The very fact that you're posting on here means that you are still lucid, still physically able to type, still able to afford your computer and the internet. All that by itself puts you in the top half of humanity.

Again, count your blessings. Cicero once said, "Gratitude is the greatest of all virtues, and the parent of all the other virtues." You cannot have real happiness without gratitude, and the more for which you are grateful - even the small things - the happier you will be. Think deeply on this. If you want to be happy in your life, learn to be grateful...for everything.

Over several trips to the Philippines I came to realize that the people there - including even the homeless, the squatters - are generally happier than they are here in America, even though their life is a lot harder than it is here. It took me a while to realize why that was, but it should have been obvious: as poor as they are, they know how to be grateful even for the little things.

That's something to think about.

Do you actually believe that? Why would people naturally require a ruler? I do not believe that such a conclusion is reasonable.

Government does only exist for power and supremacy. Look over the history of governance sometime and you will see it is nothing more than the powerful ruling over the conquered and vanquished. Government rests entirely on conquest theory.

If you only considered human history up through the Colonial period (admittedly, the previous 99% of human history), you'd have a good argument...

...but ever since the end of WWI, things have changed. "Conquest theory" fails to explain much about the modern world, especially since patriotism and "duty to one's nation" do not carry nearly the fiat they once did.

Nothing has changed. The countries of the world rest on the same foundation they did from before WWI. Yes, the acceptance of a states right to conquest is no longer seen as valid, but don't mistake such notions as anything of substance.

Guess I've been getting it wrong.

Sleep, sex and food... everything else not even close.

we sometimes need a reminder about gratitude but generally speaking my experience has been once I begin to list my gratitudes I am over whelmed by my good fortune. I like to avoid those occurrences that make me think, damn life was awesome until a minute ago...those days are horrible where everything is going well and then the bottom falls out...that's always a wake up call.

Gratitude is meaningless drivel to me, and accomplished nothing.

Because when the authority sees you not paying him or her gratitude, they will stomp you into the ground.

And all you can do is sit and suffer in silence.

Hm, let's see here - he writes the bolded statement above, yest still thinks that "conquest theory" explains everything he needs to know about the modern world.

Henrin, beware of being too simplistic, of taking the easy way out of any issue. The world just ain't that simple.

Tell me, when the right of conquest was no longer recognized as international law did any established states give up their territory? Do you think that any modern state that doesn't accept the premise of the right of conquest has any reason in existing? Don't you think that if they weren't being hypocritical they would have to accept the reality that their states were formed under such practices? Like I said, don't kid yourself into thinking that the declaration is of any importance at all.

The state derived its power by conquering and vanquishing everyone else and still to this day can only have power by taking power from the people. The very basis of government is one where every power you grant them is one less power you have for yourself. The government doesn't grant you anything, but takes everything it has from you.
