Do you believe living in the US means you consent to be governed?

Actually, we have both.

We have the protection of the Constitution, which no statute may abridge.

And the majority rule through their power of voting their representation. (but not perfectly)

Th political power of the people becomes codified into law by their representatives, in accordance with the Constitution. (again, not perfectly)

the house by voting has a majority which passes a bill, however its not law, it must then go before a second vote of the senate, which requires another majority vote, if it then passes, if must go before the president, and until he signs it its not law.

the founders did not created rule of the people, but rule of law, the house is the people, the senate the states, and he represents the union...this type of government is know can a republican form, or mixed government.

the 17th changed our government from a mixed government to a more democratic form of government, which the founders sought to avoid, because it is run by faction /special interest.

Thanks for the reply.

You've accurately, lucidly, and concisely described Congress & the Presidency as they relate to representation & legislation.

And you've done it far better, than I.

The older I get, the more I'm amazed by our Constitution and they awesome job the Framer's did, especially as the Constitution & our government move through the years, decades, and centuries, remaining functional & applicable.

The vast majority of what government does that may or may not benefit me is not something I can decide to not take part of. In fact, in cases such as the police the government will force me to obey and if I refuse could very well kill me. Furthermore, as I said in the OP, many government services are not services the government allows there to be competition in and thus forces me to consume their services if I like it or not.

That's life in the civilized world. You can always go to the Amazon rain forest, get naked and start making yourself a blowgun. I don't think Yemen has any government. That might be an option if you don't know how to make a blowgun.

tl;dr

There is no way to have a community without engaging in the 'social contract'. The only way to renounce it and live only by your own rules is to a) live alone in a desert/forest/jungle/island after faking your death (so you don't have to pay taxes), or b) start your own country (which really goes against your ideals anyhow).

Consent or not, you are governed.

No, people don't consent to being governed just by living here. In America we're all assigned a number at birth whether we agreed on it or not.

It's not "consent" but it's necessary for society to establish governments in order for us to live together. Human nature creates conflict. If a psychopath feels like it is his right to kill people someone has to stop him, whether they consent to your rules or not. Sometimes our governments go overboard in order to protect the many from the few, but to totally abolish societal rules is impractical. You don't have to like it or consent to this as much as understand and abide.
