What experience do you have in it?

Did you experiment?

What were your results?

I have no experience in any kind of witchcraft. I am curious to hear other peoples events though. Any type of anecdotal sorcery endeavor would be interesting to read and possibly discuss.

I have some friends who are practicing Wiccans. They just have religious rituals and pray like anyone else. There's no such thing as magic.

Dabbled...it was actually the subject of my senior paper in high school

No results.

In brief: Avoid.

I have some friends who are practicing Wiccans. They just have religious rituals and pray like anyone else. There's no such thing as magic.

One of my family members and spouse (one Celtic and the other Egyptian tradition) are licensed pagan ministers in another state, Wiccans who marry and bury. They refer to themselves as witches and use the term "magick."

Would you please be a little more descriptive on why?

I shouldn't, since I know anything I say on the matter will not be taken seriously and will merely be used for ridicule.

But I will anyway, I suppose.

If you examine most of the old grimoires, most of them involve summoning demons, demon possession, and the like. Most of the rest involve calling on pagan deities, or on generic unknown supernatural forces.

The most likely result of dabbling in such things is no result at all, and time and effort wasted... and the Bible says that God does not smile on those who seek supernatural aid other than Him. Some would say you are endangering your soul.

And if anything should happen... that is, if something DID answer your shout out into the Void, something beyond human knowledge, beyond the material universe... well that might be even worse for you, like a lost child shouting out in the jungle at night not knowing what might come to see.

But do as you will, you're no responsibility of mine, and I've already said more than I intended.

My best friend in High School ended up very involved in Satanic Witchcraft. Then one day he quit all of that stuff all of a sudden and threw everything out. Something had spooked him. I never got full details from him but the gist of what he said is that magick does work, you will get what you wanted, but then you will find out that it comes with a heavy price and that it's way more than you would have been willing to pay, but at that point it's too late.

My personal opinion is that he was wrong. Magick doesn't work. The fact he got what he wanted out of the spell (or ritual or whatever they call it) and that there were major negative consequences has nothing to do with the fact he performed magick. But you wanted the opinion of those who have actually experienced it and unless he has changed his mind over the years (I lost touch with him years ago), that's the opinion he would give you.

Why so afraid of other people's religions?

It's fascinating watching people make a religion out of several century's old Papal propaganda.

That's good enough reason to me.

No personal experience, but I view it as being interchangeable with any other form of mysticism.

Witchcraft is the classic Christian boogeyman. It's pagan, and therefore evil. It's basically just a bunch of nature worship, with a spattering of Greek mythology thrown in. Totally harmless.

I agree. I know a couple of Wiccans. Nice people, they talk to trees. They know my views and we agree to differ.

Thank you all for opening up and starting the discussion. I have no intention of ridiculing anyone anymore than I would like to be ridiculed by others.
I think the subject of witchcraft is one of many interesting starting points to discuss what other people believe and why they might believe it.
Hopefully more people will join the discussion, and the right questions can be asked in order to help us all have a better understanding of each other.

It all depends upon one's definition of the word witchcraft. My Wiccan friends feel themselves to be in touch with nature. They don't cast spells and don't believe that any of their ceremonies and rituals actually have an effect on the world. Casting evil spells and suchlike is nonsense. I was once cursed by a would-be warlock. When I broke my leg two years later he said it was his spell coming true. :) He was an imposing figure, he had some weak-minded followers. He was into Tibetan black magic and he was jailed for a while in the 1970's for stealing a head from a newly buried corpse to perform some loony ritual or other.

Thank you for pointing out that people define witchcraft differently. I don't know the best way to ask people what they practice, I was doing the best I could to start some type of formal discussion.
Sounds like that guy was a loon. I haven't encountered anyone like that.
Closest I can come is that my great aunt claimed she was a clairvoyant and read tarot. I was to young to really speculate though.

I met the guy through my late wife. He used to hang round in bars in Antwerp wearing a black cloak. Some people were scared of him because he was supposed to be a black magician. His followers were acid casualties. He used to make me laugh which is why he threatened to curse me.I told him to go ahead but with the proviso that he stated when and where and the nature of the awful thing that was going to befall me. He didn't of course. It was just a general, all-purpose curse. I pointed out that if I were to get the 'flu soon then that would be the curse coming true. Your aunt was not a clairvoyant, there is no such thing.

We feel that we are in touch nature, that everything has an energy. We believe in the forces of evil and good, positive and negative, light and darkness.

Christianity brings it into focus for us.

I thought Christianity was against any form of witchcraft and sorcery?

Yea, I understand many curses to be as you explain. It's still good to understand other peoples perspectives on the situations, especially if the people are rational in regards to most other subjects. I'm not implying that people should trust or believe everything people say, but at least we should try and be considerate of their thoughts and experiences.
I agree with you about my aunt. She was very convicted in her faith and had many clients from what I remember. I doubt she had any extra ordinary gifts, but I believe her and her following believe she did.

That's where we get back to the definitions.

The Catholics absorb all sorts of Pagan practices into Catholicism.

What is the origin of the Catholic Church?

I believe you shouldn't worship anyone or thing but God. However if you believe God exists in everything and created everything, wanting to be one with nature isn't so odd.
