YORK, England (Reuters) - The Church of England consecrated its first woman bishop on Monday, the culmination of years of efforts by Church modernizers to overcome opposition from traditionalists - one of whom briefly shouted a protest during the service.

More than two decades after the Church allowed women to become priests, 48-year-old mother-of-two the Reverend Libby Lane became Bishop of Stockport in a ceremony at York Minster, a Gothic cathedral in northern England.

Why are religions so mired down in dogma and "tradition" that they can't see such blatant discrimination even when it's biting them on the face?????

I'm glad they've decided to at least in one aspect adopt modern society's position instead of the biblical one. The church's transformation over the past few hundred years from the hateful, violent organization it once was to the hugs-and-sunshine organization it is today has only come from societal pressures for them to modernize. The bible sure hasn't changed in the past 2,000 years, but Christians have.

1 Timothy 2:11-12 ESV

Let a woman learn quietly with all submissiveness. I do not permit a woman to teach or to exercise authority over a man; rather, she is to remain quiet.

I'd like to be the first to welcome the Church of England to the 19th century.

That last line should read:

Why are some religions so mired down in dogma and "tradition" that they can't see such blatant discrimination even when it's biting them on the face?????

Obviously not ALL religions are quite so silly.

It's of no consequence, the Church Of England is irrelevant in Modern Britain. The COE is just the Tory party at prayer.

Which mirrors the near total collapse of ubber liberal mainstream Protestant denominations here. The Episcolpelians, Presbyterians and the largest Lutheran group became demographically non viable a generation ago.

There is no longer any social pressure in the United States to at least nominally belong to a church. As a result, those inclined towards secularism tend to go there directly, with out stopping at liberal Christianity.

That really is the Good News. There is no place in the modern world for a primitive superstition.

Anyone on this thread a member of the Church of England?

You are confusing the collapse of liberal christianity with the collapse of christianity as a whole.

I stand corrected. Perhaps mankind will never be fully freed from the yoke of religion.

It was pretty "free" from the yoke under Pol Pot, Mao and Stalin. Things did not really turn out that good.

They replaced one religion with another.

They may well have. Of course, current secularists also peddle a religion of sorts.

That is a myth that anti atheists peddle endlessly in forums. Never seen it anywhere else.

Thank GOD for that!!!!

I"ll agree. Fully voluntary membership makes for a healthier Christianity that is unafraid to speak the truth.

Nope, looks like just the usual suspects dragging their politics into the Church.

Yes, truth.

Is part of that "truth" that women should shut up, sit down, and know that their place is to just listen and do as they're told?

Women and Men are equal with different roles. The full verses of Ephesians 5:24-25 illustrate the concept well:

"For the husband is the head of the wife, as Christ also is the head of the church, He Himself being the Savior of the body. 24But as the church is subject to Christ, so also the wives ought to be to their husbands in everything. 25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself up for her,…
Christianity, religous systems in general, and many secular belief systems also place simialr restrictions on men."

As a side note, Christianity os not the only sytem that advocates restrictions on behavior- just ask the Mayor of Houston and Barak Obama.
