Ghandi gets my vote. There is no fairy tale book about him nor giant hideous symbols of his days, only a man of justice and peace and love gunned down by the hideous opposite side of man.

Define God.
But my vote would go to George Washington.

That is a tough moving target historically speaking. There are so many people over the course of human history that were considered, or "recognized," as a God it is laughable. The irony to your choice is Gandhi spoke frequently about his take on God, and just about every time his answer was non-descriptive (in form context.) He would say things like "God is truth" and "the character of truth" and "I do not regard God as a person." That someone would say he is recognized as God, or closest to, suggests they were not listening to anything Gandhi said on the subject at all.

Gandhi was a racist to black people
and I remember reading he had really strange views on sex. Demanded celibacy, and erased homosexual art from ancient hindu temples. He slept naked with young woman including his niece to prevent his involuntary sex discharges... IDK how that was supposed to help.

Ben Franklin. How many people think that sayings from Poor Richard's Almanac originated from the Bible? I bet a bunch more than with most people. Confucius is probably neck in neck with him though in that regard.

So I'm confused....Are you saying that Jesus was human and not god? Or did you just miss understand the question, "What human Has Come Closer To Becoming Recognized As A God Than All Others?".

Jesus of Nazareth? Or is this a trick question?

Depends on what you mean by "god?" What you mean by "fairytale?"

Not all biographical stories are necessarily all true or free from lies.

The truth about Mahatma Gandhi: he was a wily operator, not India’s smiling saint

The Indian nationalist leader had an eccentric attitude to sleeping habits, food and sexuality.
However, his more controversial ideas have been written out of history

Anyway....with your fanatical description of Gandhi - aren't you getting carried away?

Wouldn't the appropriate title be simply, "Hero?"

"You are as you do."

Probably one of the Egyptian pharaoh's or one of the Aztec kings

"God's" creation (this silly planet) is a perpetual calendar of disasters from earthquakes to tsunamis to hurricanes to fires with it's inhabitants eating each other to survive so pointing to Ghandi as a "non-perfect" is not relevant to the original post. The universe itself is basically filled with one explosion and collision after another. Bottom line: to be close to a God demands imperfection.

I confess. It is I. I just am not yet widely recognized.

Serious face on- most likely jesus. His public relations firm has been wildly successful.

Eh?

All I did was ask what you mean by "fairy tale." And to point out that not all biographies or auto-biographies are accurate....there's always a slant (whether it's negative or positive), depending on the writer.

Furthermore, you're resorting to relativism - by not referring to Ghandi (based on your descriptions of his deeds), as a hero instead!

See what I mean about relativism? You can make up anything you want to suit what you like.
In this case, you want to bestow the title "god" on what would normally be called a hero.

Anyway.....suit yourself....let yourself go where your fancy takes you. Cheers.

Julius Caesar was declared a God by his adopted Son, Augustus, after a star rose in the east (known as a comet) in 34 BC. Augustus had the title 'Son of God' and 'Savior' added to his titles at that time. (Augustus Res Gestae 34)
