A nut case has kidnapped your infant child and is holding a cocked gun to the child's head. A police sniper has him sighted for a head shot but is not authorized to shoot without the parent (s) permission. What do you do? Take the shot or continue to negotiate?

The cops would never turn to an emotional parent to make the decision on their course of action

Define nut case. Is the person deranged? Do I know that? Is the person responding to questions or comments in a manner that appears to resemble some form of reason and rational response?

Putting aside the improbability of the scenario and assuming that my child wasn't obstructing the potential shot, I'd give permission to fire every day of the week and twice on Sunday. I'm genuinely curious as to what greater meaning you're assigning to the scenario posed?

Of course being 51 I may be thinking that I really don't want to be raising a kid of till I am 69 years old.

Pop quiz, hotshot. There's a bomb on a bus. Once the bus goes 50 miles an hour, the bomb is armed. If it drops below 50, it blows up. What do you do? What do you do?

Slash the tires. Ever gone 50 on a flat?

I would say take the shot without hesitation...

I nor my family will not be at the will of a !@#$%#$@$@#$!@$!$%.

I would somehow make the pedal stay down at around 55... and I jump out of the car, slide and roll.

Wait.

How does the parent have a say in what the police do with a man with a gun who is holding a helpless infant in immediate peril.

Ahem, no jury in a sane would would ever fault the sniper for taking the shot on his own volition; but in the end responsibility lies with the incident captain or leader of the SWAT team. A parent would have no say, let alone one who is under extreme duress.

Fire the producer and director, get a new lead male and hope for the best with a bad script.

Crash the bus into an orphanage for the blind & deaf. Proceed to masturbate violently with Icyhot. Celebrate with pizza.

Edit: I did not see this part.

your not on the bus, you were just fed the information. it's a city bus.

New plan of action: Hijack bus via helicopter. Crash the bus into an orphanage for the blind & deaf. Proceed to masturbate violently with Icyhot. Celebrate with pizza.

Good grief, what a silly, disingenuous reply.

Some people really don't get the point of thought experiments. Of COURSE such a scenario would never happen.

Anyway, I would tell them to take the shot.

It seems like a reasonable question to me. If I were deciding whether to have the sniper take the shot or for the negotiations to continue, I'd want to know if the person with the gun up to my child's head were demanding an escape vehicle, or if they were shouting about the glory of Satan.
