If people believe that there is no God to answer to, that this life is the only life we'll ever experience....

What's the repercussion? Will you be able to "cherish" it to the full extent....to live it with full enjoyment?
Will you even be able to enjoy it at all? Or is that simply wishful thinking?

Assuming there is no God and an afterlife......

Can you imagine - realistically - the kind of world this would be?

I can imagine what kind of world it would be: the same world I live in every day. I believe there's probably nothing after this life. This is it, and yet I still am not out raping, murdering or pillaging. Why? Because I'm not a ****ing asshole.

I cherish every second of my life because I know that it's fleeting, and because of that I recognize how precious and unique the lives of others are. I see the life of myself and others as porcellan cups. Each one of the cups are unique, and when they are broken, the pieces will never become the porcellan cup again, its beauty is destroyed forever. Personally I find the idea of permanently destroying something as unique and beautiful as a human being to be absolutely terrifying. This isn't a unique trait of mine, we humans intrinsically have compassion for our neighbors. There will always be bad seeds among us, but then again, no amount of religion is going to stop bad people from being bad.

So in summary, if fear of cosmic punishment is the only thing keeping someone from raping, murdering and pillaging, then that person is a ****ing asshole, and most people aren't ****ing assholes.

You're not out raping and pillaging right now......because you know what is good and what is not. You have a
moral standard to live by.

But let's say there is no God, thus there wouldn't be any moral standards at all. No distinction between good or bad. How do you imagine life will be in this world?

That's the world we live in. And the limited nature of our existence is what drives us to make the most of it. If you'll live forever, you can literally sleep through your whole life. And there is no cosmic justice after death, so we must make sure that there is justice here on Earth.

I don't honestly see how belief in a god or an afterlife makes anyone cherish anything. That would make everything we experience while alive completely trivial.

And of course moral standards don't come from a god. They come from our existence. Causing other people pain and misery is bad because being alive and happy matters. If death is only a transition to a better afterlife, then there's no reason not to kill everyone you meet, to send them to paradise. You're doing them a favor. The morality that monotheistic religions preach only makes sense in a world where their theology is wrong.

Exactly the same if not better, because people wouldn't be killing each because one doesn't believe the same fairy tale the other one does. You're making the mistake of assuming that god is the one who grants morals, but that's because you're trying to adapt it to your beliefs. In a world where there is no god and never was doesn't mean there are no morals.

Wouldn't you think that atheists would have a major and disproportionately high population in prisons? Yet the actual religious make-up of prisons pretty closely correlates to the make-up of the American population as a whole. Most inmates are christians because we live in a country where christianity is predominate. Religion is not what stops people from raping and murdering.

Are you telling me right now that if you found out god didn't exist you would become violent and reckless? Is that the type of person you are?

First, if the only reason you don't go around raping and killing is because you believe in a god then please, by all means, keep believing.

Those of us who don't believe in deities form our moral compass based on our upbringing and the kind of world we want to live in. I don't want to be raped and killed so I don't rape and kill and am in favor of society taking action to stop raping and killing. It has crap all to do with the supernatural.

If there is no moral code....if there is no good or bad....and life is meant to be lived to the fullest (since it's the only one you'll ever experience)....

What makes you think they wouldn't be killing and committing all sorts of things that would make them happy....and live life to the fullest?

If you see something you like, why wouldn't you just take it? If you want to ravish a child, or anyone....why won't you?
If someone stands in the way of your happiness, why wouldn't you eliminate him?

What stops you to fill all your heart's desires?

Before we go much further, can we slay the strawman, No God= No moral code? Are you under the impression that largely athiestic and agnostic communities rape and pillage at will?

What about the helpless? The maimed? The weak? Those who cannot defend themselves?
I suppose they won't be able to live their life to the fullest.

Imagine if you're one of them.

How will you cope with that one life you've got?

You can have a moral standard even if you don't believe in God.

However, there is no moral standard if there is no God.

That's exactly how I view it all.

I don't want or need anything beyond myself for moral/ethical guidance.

Nice place this world. Mostly....

The issue is not about what you don't want, or what you claim you don't need. This is not about want or need.

Well, I guess you've answered the question after all. YOU are the type of person who would be violent and reckless if you didn't believe in god. On behalf of humanity I plead for you to keep your faith, because apparently you can't even comprehend why someone wouldn't want to rape and murder. Wowza..

If you believe in repentance you can obviously do that sort of thing and not feel guilty for the rest of your life.

Personally I don't believe in such drivel. I am responsible for my actions. Always.

How come it's so hard for the God botherers to understand it? We fully understand your belief in the silly sky daddy. What's difficult in not believing in him?

Is that supposed to be an "intellectual"l response to a legitimate scenario if there is no good or bad?

I suppose this means we're done discussing, you and I. You're out of the game.

Bye-bye.

That's utterly and unequivocally wrong. Societies can set forth moral standards with or without the existence or acknowledgement of a God.

I answered you 3 times, two of which were in multiple paragraphs, all of which you have ignored and instead came back with each time "Why wouldn't someone want to rape and murder someone?" "Why wouldn't you want to do that?"

You really, really need to seek professional help, and please don't lose your faith.

There is good and bad.

There is still ethics.

You don't need a silly sky daddy to provide that for you.

Think a bit and it will all be very clear.

We're not talking about repentance....or guilt. Those things wouldn't exists if there is no God...and no good or bad.... if all behaviours are neutral!

Kindly review the OP and the scenario given.

How can you have a clue about what is good or bad....if there is no God that gave you that moral standard?

Many folks adhere to the do unto others as you would have them do unto you - that moral code requires no God to stand the test of logic (or law). To assert that a belief in God somehow prevents all moral transgressions is just as silly as the assertion that atheists lack any morals. We do not leave moral judgements/standards to God (or to the religious) - we often accuse, try, convict and punish the immoral right here and now using completely secular courts.

WRONG! I can feel guilt about stuff though I don't believe in any sky daddy!!

How hard is it for you to understand anything?????

Look up ethics.

I know it has been explained to you before.

Your defense of willful ignorance is stupid.

Nevermind. OP confirmed as cray-cray. I'm out.
