Listening to Christmas carols last night then waking up to watch the news it is like living in two different worlds. Evil vs. good are the to main ingredients of the formula for man. One has to wonder in the year 2014 we still are submerged in terror and dictatorships, starvation and brutality. Is there any reason top believe it will be better in 3014?

I won't be alive in 3014 so humanity will never be as good as it is now. Beyond that, the news is not a source for the good in humanity generally.

You seem way too rational for a Progressive. ;)

Well I am arrogant so it averages out :)

I am not a DNC corporate progressive, and my facebook is flooded every day with feel good story posts from women saying "Why can't more people be like this?" when they do not realize that more people are like that.

Not really, progressives just love the borrow and spend policies that shift the costs of current gov't programs to future generations. The most common excuse for not actually taxing enough to fund the current gov't programs is that the economy is too weak. Assuming that the economy has been too weak for the last 40 years, yet we grew federal per capita spending anyway and continue to add more spending programs, it is unlikely that we will ever borrow and spend our way to prosperity.

There are far more good folks than evil folks; far more crime victims than criminals. The problem, IMHO, is that you cannot hug a criminal to make them change their ways. The optimism that all folks can be good folks, if only good folks tried hard enough to rehabilitate the evil folks' has not worked out so well in practice (see recidivism rates). There comes a time when evil must be confronted and removed (destroyed?) by force, no longer by using hugs and hopes. All carrots and no sticks does not work all of the time, there will always be that element (2%?) which refuses to suppress (control?) their evil ways.

It rather depends who is signing the carols and you need to find a better class of news source that has some positive stories too. The main ingredients for man are hydrogen, oxygen and carbon - good and evil are rather generic concepts we invented and are really too simplistic to be much use in practice. With the benefit of hindsight, I'm much rather be in 2014 than 1914 and see no reason for 3014 to be anything other than different (though not as different as we'd expect).
