Why Intellectuals Laugh At Atheists

You know, as one thread earlier this week pointed out, it's entirely possible that it's IMPOSSIBLE to be an atheist. Agnostic? You bet. Atheist? Maybe not so much.

It's not impossible. I am an atheist. No gods. The thread merely stated it.

Eh....I agree with you.

But since they define themselves as "atheists"....how can we not refer to them by what they say they are? Even if it's just tongue-in-cheek.

It would seem that based on this criteria, the intellectuals are largely atheists.

So I'm just pretending not to believe in a sky daddy?

I agree. The more intelligent tend not to believe in the existence of imaginary beings.

The atheist scientists could all be lying and have secret altars at home where they worship various gods but it's not very likely.

Because lying about your mainstream religious beliefs in a nation that's an anomaly in terms of religiosity among developed nations is a probable scenario.;)

I agree that many Americans, especially politicians only pay lip service to religion, but why would anybody pretend to be an atheist?

Being atheist doesn't mean NOT CHRISTIAN.

It means a strict disbelief in....ANYTHING that could be considered supernatural.

Of course. I include all gods that have been invented by mankind.

Pssst!

*whispers*

We are in agreement.

I did read it. I am still an atheist.

So you think. There's a lot of **** in our heads that we're completely unaware of pretty much all the time. Id, ego, and super ego. Check it out.

Laughing at the thought of an intellectual who isn't atheist

Aside from the title, the article makes no such argument that atheists don't exist.

Did you read it?

Basically, the article is saying that, by all accounts, by all studies conducted this far on the subject, humans seem HARD WIRED to believe in certain things that can't be proven. Not consciously. It suggest that we may be genetically predisposed towards believing in a higher power, or other unexplained things. Whether we admit it or not.
