Does the world seem more lost than ever or is has it always been just "chicken soup"?

I don't know if it's caused by a lack of traditions, values, core beliefs, direction, goals or purpose but people seem to be unsure of what's important?

Obviously, we all want to live as comfortable as possible and attempt to attain that position, but isn't there suppose to be something more?

This place of torturing, terrorizing, cutting off heads and blowing people up isn't the world I remember. Or was I sheltered from it and just starting to see it for what it's always been? Between looney idealism and excessive greed, I feel like I've fallen in the rabbit hole.

I'd still rather be living in the 21st century than say, the 14th. But that's just me

When I was about six or seven, one of the neighbors shot his father and sister for no reason. I didn't see the actual shooting but I saw the bodies and the morgue taking them away. This was in the 1950's. One of the locals kidnapped a couple of kids and molested them. That was about the same time. Also, there was a TV show called "Combat" on TV at about the same time. It glorified one of the bloodiest wars in history - WWII. It was started by a lunatic who starved people to death and burned them in ovens, performed bizarre and cruel experiments on them, and murdered them for nothing other than their religion or their race. People still remembered that war back then as it had just ended.

As Solomon said, there is not much new under the sun. Blaming what you see on "greed" and "idealism" is idiotic. People commit these acts, idealism and greed do not commit these acts. And people can be stopped, if we will only stop them.

It seems that way to me, but I'm not sure if it's just that we have access to so much more information these days. The world seems to be getting more and more insane by the day, and I feel like I'm living in a vast sea of lost souls.

George Washington once noted, “If you remove religious principles from the schools you are going to lose national morality." And guess what's happening?

Finally, someone who remembers it wasn't always this way.

I kind of thought this song was written with a similar sentiment.

I'll tell you the way it was put to me, some 30 or so years ago: things are heating up, and the flame is getting hotter. People will either get their **** together, or start popping off, one by one. It's been one of my life's works just to keep from being one of the popped kernels. ;)

I think this is actually a big part of it, a broken moral compass.

Something just seems profoundly wrong. I don't expect the younger generation to really get it either. Maybe, it's simply an affliction of age?

Relative to world history, humanity has never been more well educated, more peaceful and more prosperous than we are today.

There is still terrible evil in this world that we have to deal with and there probably always will be to a certain extent, but I believe as long as we can keep Nukes from being used, Humanity can only keep stepping forward.

This ISIS thing is about the future, some people think the future means the end of history.

ISIS and those who follow them are a dying breed of people, they cannot hope to stand against the wave of modernity sweeping over our planet.

They among the last vestiges of total barbarism left in our world and will eventually succumb by force or by influence to a more rational way of living.

The hell of it is I recognize that we've never been wealthier or more advanced, though there's a nagging sense of urgency. It's not merely nukes, disease or falling governments, but those things aren't helping.

The world has pretty much been this way. Only difference today is the 24 hours news channels bringing all the horror into the living room.

That may be true, and the News hype and interconnection doesn't help. But too many people I talk to on the streets say we're living in interesting times. Not a positive.

These things have always gone on somewhere in the world.

Human nature never changes.

Back in his day, most people didn't even go to school. School was only for the elite.

Yeah, but the world is changing into a more technically advanced, populated melting pot. It seems almost like the pot is full?

It is true grip.

And to be honest I've never been more concerned until my son was born, I worry of the world he will grow up in.

And a far biggest test than ISIS will be how we come together to tackle issues like Ebola (or should something worse strike) when climate change eventually takes hold or for example of a meteor is on course to strike Earth.

Globalization could prove to be our downfall should something like Ebola bring us to ruin, or our salvation should we combine our resources to stop say a meteorite Armageddon style...

I think I'm getting off point now but ultimately Grip, I believe modernity and technology can only keep pushing us in a more peaceful direction.

The biggest questions are going to come soon and things we've already been warned about to a certain extent.

A great technological shift is just around the corner, absolutely extraordinary shifts in the way we live our lives is fast approaching and we will have to grapple with some truly terrifying choices.

Particularly in regards to the use of robots on the battlefield.

Maybe I'm just going a bit too overboard now I'll shut up.

Ultimately though I say, modernity wins out and savagery will perish because of it.

The times have always been interesting. I was born right after WWII and before Korea. Now Korea was interesting, along with the USSR's invasions of Hungry and Czechoslovakia followed by Vietnam. Several Arab/Israeli wars, wars going on in Central America and Africa and India and Pakistan wars. China conquering Tibet and the break up and wars of the former Yugoslavia. All the time since I was born the east and west going from Atom Bombs to Hydrogen Bombs , from bombers to missiles and ICBMs. The use of chemical and biological weapon at different times and places to include a terrorist group letting them go in a subway in Japan.

I would say since I was born every time has been interesting.

I feel bad now. Jet don't overly worry for your child, because I'm sure you're doing all that's possible for a bright future. Ultimately, we're all just passing thru this place and your children will have more say over your future eventually.

Yes, you've hit the point dead on, that as a people, we're at an extremely important crossroads, similar to the Industrial Revolution, maybe bigger. At these points in human history we are at our most vulnerable, especially with the power we now harness.

I think you're right that we'll survive this nexus of events, but there may be a winnowing of the herd to achieve the balance over the next few decades. Keep thinking positive. ;)

Knowledge doesnt fix what ails us. It is a loss of soul. Science and reason cannot provide everything that is essential for the mental health of the human race. We are far more than just mammals with the ability to reason.

Back in his day, most people didn't even go to school. School was only for the elite.

And back in his day America was much more of a Christian/Bible centered nation.

What's missing more and more in America is Godly WISDOM. Don't confuse Godly wisdom with knowledge or intelligence. Clinton and Obama have been called intelligent, but I wouldn't consider either one to have much in the way of Godly wisdom.

Ironically, I suspect that traditions an values based on cultural ideals rather than empirical evidence have been exploited. Combine that with the speed of information and BAM you have the perception of a world that is increasingly violent, when in fact it is quite the opposite.

I for one think the religious element in the Middle East is being exploited by people who don't believe in God but finding "purpose" in the manipulation of others and the chance to harm others with impunity.

There's an ineffable quality to existence that we're missing out on lately. That's why I kept posting videos of songs that touch the brain (soul) with qualities beyond reasoning.
