Ponder This!

Now is a illusion.

In the context of the material world it is not, though reality is indeed an illusion.

I would agree that regarding the whole continuum thing there is no time; no past, no present, no future.

I am always amazed at how quickly some will jump on somebody and insult/accuse/denigrate the person and completely miss the chance to have an interesting discussion.

Consider the point of the OP? I'm not sure what the 'noise' is all about, but otherwise it is an interesting concept. Einstein proved, in theory, that time travel is possible. So far we have had not had means to test that theory, but it is a fascinating concept to think about.

So what if all that ever existed, exists, or what we see as 'future' is a closed, unchanging, system. And we are born into one particular era or period in that whole system? Should we learn how to do so, we would be able to return to any ancient time or go forward to any point that is not yet recorded in the time that we were born into.

Do I believe this is the case? No not really. I think if that was the case, somebody from the 'future' would already have been back to visit us. But it is fun to think about.

Now is still a illusion even in a material world. What most people consider as being now actually is a chunk of time that is a combination of past events and potential future events. Before one could say the word 'now' that moment is over. If a 'now' exists at all it is so small that for all purposes it is meaningless. But then ‎gravitational time dilation mucks up any concept of now that one could dream up. So it boils down to a illusion manifested by the human brain.

"People like us, who believe in physics, know that the distinction between past, present, and future is only a stubbornly persistent illusion" Einstein

Interesting. So the future could be nothingness. Nothingness is defined as a state in which all field values are timelessly equal to zero. That being said what is the rate or speed of change (from one instant to the next for example?)? That rate of change cannot be precisely zero.

I haven't really given that much thought. Nothingness, perhaps. What existed before the big bang? Did the big bang occur into nothingness, where nothing was, into a void, into nothingness which eventually expanded into something, universes made and expanded into nothingness. Is the void of space and perhaps time, where nothing exists at all waiting to be filled, really nothingness or a void. One could go around in circles on this. Nothing exists until something exists.

The future doesn't exist until it becomes the present at which time it is no longer the future. So the future never really exists, see what I mean about going around in circles. So I suppose the future according to time and existence is nothingness or non-existence. Perhaps according to the universe which continues to expand into the void of space, into nothingness which once the universe/s expand it becomes something.

But perhaps the question is can someone accept something can come out of nothing, something can take the place of nothingness. Perhaps a rational man can't.

Then there is the discussion to be had about time, is time linear or can time fold back upon itself at time or is time undulating like some frequencies or an eel. Plenty of possibilities there.

I just threw the horn blowing as an example of a never ending constant, probably should have used a better example. (I was thinking of a friend stressed out to the limit asking why time does not stop so he can feel some relief. He ended his own life and I always saw him as a victim of the burdens life sometimes throws at us.) I wonder if or when we solve and understand time, what will it allows us to do. I think it will be a long time coming but we will learn what we need to.

Yes, I don't really expect to see time travel in my lifetime, but I think it is an interesting concept. But there was a line in the much Oscar awarded movie "Out of Africa" in which the duchess made a statement something to the effect that it was intended that we not be able to see too far ahead. The message of course is that if we knew what was coming we would not be able to focus on and/or enjoy here and now.

You posted this "Yesterday, 08:52 AM" I suspect that wasnt "now". Or now. Or Now . Or now. Or now. Or now. ... wait now!. Damn the first "now" is now history. And if you ever respond it will be in the future from now. One gun shot to head and you can escape now forever. The problem is that time isnt consistent in all points on the universe. Gravitational time dilation blows a huge hole in Presentism. Depending on the location where we both are in the universe my now may not be synced up with your now. Perhaps I am in your future....{deleated to save space}...Now what were you saying?

`
Hypothetically, could there be people spending their entire lives, following these gravity hot spots?
