De tuk er jirbz!
That is so easy to say from a position of calm and hindsight. But perception plays a large part in this type of interaction. Here is a dad suddenly confronted with a strange male in his daughter's bedroom at 2 AM. The probability of that person being there to harm his daughter is high. Added that the daughter said the male was unknown to her, you have a situation that on the surface looks very dangerous. I very much doubt that there was much time to sort out what was happening before the kid made his fatal move. What is deplorable here is that you and others seem to think that gun owners are trigger happy individuals who look for excuse to off someone. That is the impression you are presenting, whether you intend to or not.
You left out the part where the father calls 911, and you left out the part where the father and the bot get into an argument which is recorded on the 911 call, and you left out the part where the bot suddenly reaches for something, and that's what prompted the father to shoot.
Sorry if the dad burst in and shot the guy you may have a point but he obviously didnt think the danger was so immediate as he felt he had time to ask his daughter if she knew him. So yeah he had time and decided to kill rather than detain. The only witnesses of this sudden move are the father (guy who did the shooting) and daughter who just lost her boyfriend and risks losing her father as well.
See some of the posts and yes there are some trigger happy yahoos who really are looking for an excuse to off someone. What is deplorable here is that some people think deadly force is an ok reaction to non life threatenign situations.
Really? I hadn't found an article that noted the 911 call recording the argument and the shooting, and it's not been brought up on the thread before this. Do you have a link that shows that is what happened?
Again you are playing with hindsight. We can all see in hindsight that the kid didn't have weapon, but at that moment, as far as the father knew, while the boy had not been visibly wielding a weapon, that did not mean he didn't have one concealed. I'm not denying that there are indeed trigger happy yahoos. My issue is that pretty much regardless of the circumstances, the gun wielder is automatically labeled a trigger happy yahoo.

If you think the situation is enough under control to ask your daughter if she knows the guy then you shoot him you are committing murder. You might get off in court in a few states with a really good lawyer but chances are you will be spending a lot of time with your new best friend Bubba, and deservedly so.
What is missing from this, is some of the data.In these circumstances I think the father went overboard with an irrevocable lethality. I do agree there are circumstances where deadly force can be justified. This does not appear to be one to me.
Yeah shoot first ask questions later.
Kill em all and let god sort it out.
Obviously I value human life more than you do.

This I am told actually happened..
A young teenage girl called her boyfriend and asks him to come over and sneak through her bedroom window. He does but her young brother hears the disturbance and runs in to the fathers bedroom and tells him someone is breaking in. The father grabs a gun and enters in to her bedroom concerned for her safety. He opens the door and sees the young guy standing directly over her lying in bed. The father asks, Do you know this guy"? She says, "No". The father then shoots and kills the young man. Question: Who if anyone, is guilty of what?
You don't need to kill someone to protect your family.

Why, the gun of course!
