This is just something that struck me after reading something a kid wrote. But do you think people are arrogant about their views? Be it Christian, atheist, democrat, republican, or 49ers fan?
First off, generalizations are generally untrue. (Please forgive the awful pun.)
Also note that I am describing my views on belief in general, not solely religion.
I, personally, think that it's a matter of introspection. Introspective people tend to be less arrogant, though nearly everyone who has any confidence can be considered arrogant to a degree. People with experience, age, or intelligence, which in some cases the first two are analogous, might think they know things that they don't because, according to their schema, that's just how the world works. Those with more experience or winters, unlike those with only intelligence, will know and usually acknowledge that there are possibilities beyond their own concepts of a subject. Those with little experience will think of an idea, decide that it is logical, and cling to it.
Introspective people don't usually assume they're right. They usually think about it, why they think about it, how it could be wrong, and the like. Non-introspective people think as "Me, the person," whereas their introspective counterparts think as "Me,
a person." A person can always be wrong, but
the person is different, better than others, and so is not likely to be wrong if
a person would be right over them.
