I'm not a believer or a disbeliever but I ask is it not hellish to think a "spirit" is confined to say one house for however long? What possible explanation could there be for such an existence?
I'm a disbeliever (in ghosts, in hell, in souls, and in all aspects of the paranormal and supernatural generally).
But I think your question is interesting and I don't think that addressing it logically requires "belief" so, here goes...
I think your position sort of presupposes that the "ghost" can't leave the house (or wherever).
Do we know that to be a "fact"?
Maybe the "ghost" lives in that house but is free to wander the "world" (our world, the spirit world, this dimension, others, etc...) at will.
Maybe the "ghost" chooses to stay in the house but I've never heard of a "haunting" (and understand, I don't really keep up on ALL incidents of haunting) where the haunting is going on 24/7.
From what little I know I get the impression that the actual haunting (the "ghost" coming into contact with the physical world and/or with human beings) is sort of episodic.
Like, the family moves into the house and everything is good for a while, but then **** starts going crazy. But not 24/7 crazy. At first the residents will notice that the TV is shutting on and off (for example) but then that'll stop. A couple days later another resident will find kitchen cabinets opening and closing, maybe stuff falling out of cupboards, but then that'll stop too. Maybe a few nights after that the residents will hear chains rattling in a child's room but when they go to investigate, no chains physically in the room, and no more spooky chains rattling sound.
The point is, there's plenty of time between episodes for the "ghost" to be wandering off and doing other things. I don't know of any reason to believe that the "ghost" just goes into hibernation (or whatever ghosts do when they're not actively stirring up ****) locally.
For all we know the "ghost" is in Palm Beach playing shuffleboard with other ghosts during the downtime between incidents of active haunting.
Also, it does not make sense to me that this spirit could be driven out by a human being. Do we possess the "powers" to do that?
"The power of Christ compels you!!!"
It isn't "us" who are driving the ghost out.
It's the power of some other paranormal/supernatural force or being that we're either calling in to service or requesting to act on our behalf.
Whether that paranormal/supernatural force or being is the Christian God, or voodoo magic, or a friendly "ghost" or whatever is irrelevant.
I've never heard any stories (again, I'm ignorant of all but a very few such stories) where a human being physically combats a "ghost" and forces it from a residence through sheer will power or brute strength.
