When you see animal grieve over a dead offspring like elephants for example, what is going through them?

I think they're mourning their loss.
Same as humans.
The notion that animals have no feelings or emotions is ridiculous.

They don't pray because they actually have faith.

Maybe they're contemplating just how to place their hands together .. to pray.

or

George! George! Get up George!. You're not a 'possum George! Get Up! There's things to be d........

Defines nagging someone to death.

Seriously, it is an interesting phenomena.

How do you know they're not?

Two days ago, my beloved Maine Coon cat was hit by a car and killed. He was afraid of cars, and never went near the street, so I don't understand what happened. Anyway, one of my other cats was his particular buddy, and while we didn't let any of them watch the burial in the woods, his eyes are now red-rimmed, and I honestly believe he knows and is grieving. Just because they can't cry doesn't mean they don't hurt. Poor thing... So sad...

My condolences Lady P. :(

I hope you have got some Pics of him and you together.

Yes of course he knows as he had lived life with him.....even when our pup was sick. Our cats knew something was up with him. Even to the point of laying by him which is something they don't do unless he is laying around and watching people eat dinner. Walk Right over to him and sniff him to check him out too.

I really do hate when Animals get ran over by cars.....especially cats. As they are not just that careless.

Oh no. :(

They do grieve, I know this for a fact too. When my dearest cat Bud died of Feline Diabetes, his son Mickey howled and moped for a long, long time.....

Hugs, Polgara, for I know you share the loss too.

That's an Awesome pic Ray!

Hello Polgara, I'm glad you liked it, hope it can help with your loss.

Sorry to hear that, Pol. I've had dogs howl for days when their buddy died. I know they know and miss their friends and companions. My oldest dog is nearly 16 now, and I know he doesn't have long. I've argued with myself a bunch over putting him down or not. Every time I think I should he has a big rebound, and I change my mind. Sorry for your loss. When you're ready, maybe you should get another. My mother was a big cat fan, and always wanted a Maine Coon cat, but never had one.

He was a good-looking guy, and the cold didn't bother him. He was neutered, so it wasn't the "call" from a female that made him risk the street...I just don't know why. He wasn't run over that we could tell, but his skull was a mess...I won't describe it...so hopefully he died instantly. He loved the woods, so that's why we buried him there. It wasn't easy digging the grave since you know how frozen things are here, but we did it. Even put a little twig cross there so we'll know where he is, told him how to find the "rainbow bridge," and said goodbye. Maybe one of his other lives will find him here again.

I, and my cat family, send our deepest condolences for your loss.

When my beloved 7-Cat died in her sleep, her partner, PuTan Bare Scherezade AKA PuBare, howled for two weeks. I had placed her remains in a bookcase in my bedroom. Then, he spent one night lying in front of that bookcase. The next day, he stopped howling and went back to his normal behavior. I know - how could he even know that "she" was in an urn in a bookcase? Did he see me weeping while I sat near her? But that is what happened, a memory I'll never lose.

It's been 10 years since her death. I (we?) still miss her. PuBare will turn 15 in May.

I think he prays for treats, even at this moment. I will answer his prayer right now.
