What would you tell a young person about your immediate environment and America in general if one from a backward third world country came to spend a year with you and your family? This person has very little education and exposure to technology and knows little if anything about the internet.

I'd tell him to stay away from the internet.
Get out as much as possible and meet as many people face to face as possible.

1. Meet and talk to as many different kinds of people as possible. We've got everyone! You've might even meet some folks descending from your nation.
2. Loosen up, people here are rather expressive.
3. People can be wasteful with food here, don't let it bother you.
4. We tip waiters here, so, if they did a good job.....keep that 15% in mind.
5. Go to an amusement park.
6. Try as many types of cuisine as possible while you're here. Goes hand in hand with #1 in expanding your horizons.
7. Go tailgating.
8. Be open to new things. Obviously.

That's some stuff to keep in mind for him/her. I don't see how this is related to anything philosophical, but it's still a good topic.

Tell them? I wouldn't tell them anything. I would let them experience it. Make their own opinion. That's why they are here...right? Of course you would help with the small matters such as understanding our monetary system.

You might start with teaching them how to use the bathroom facilities. Not joking.

I think I would try to learn from him. Partially for entertainment but mostly inspiration. The average American can learn a lot about frugality from these people.
