I ask because I see the argument that believers in God are just not that smart, capable or well educated and may even be delusional or mentally ill. Do you trust a doctors that are believers?

Answers are "yes", "no", and "only if there isn't an atheist alternative"

Working on the poll.

health is more important than any ideology or belief l think

they would trust any doctor if they needed treatment

teh same thing is valid for the believers

Personally I don't think (and according to the poll,a lot of people seem think the same thing), that a doctor's religious beliefs (or lack there of) is an issue.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I personally would have a problem with a doctor who thinks that he has the right to proselytize to you while under his care.In my opinion, that's not very proffesional.

My wife is a doctor (an atheist),I am close friends with many other doctors of varying faiths and non-faiths,and their own religious beliefs (or lack of) never seem to come up when consulting a patient.

It's bad enough that too many doctors (religious, atheist, and agnostic) have varying degrees of a "God Complex" themselves.

I have no problem with theist doctors. It's not like religion makes you stupid, there are plenty of smart theists but, the undereducated tend to be attracted towards religion. I've met several Christians that actively dissuade their peers from pursuing a college education, because it'll "turn" them atheist. These uneducated/anti-education theists tend to be very vocal, so it makes theists look bad. But, the effect is mutual; the atheist's who are the most vocal tend to speak for themselves, not the atheist community. In the end, education speaks for itself. I'm disturbed by dumb atheists at the same level as dumb theists. (Although I have more shame towards the atheist, since they'll make me look bad)

I don’t think religion specifically is a major issue in this context but I know here in the UK there is some more general discrimination, sadly often from older patients.

I know a hospital doctor who is a Sikh and he has occasionally had issues, with patients either explicitly stating they don't want him treating them or making their displeasure apparent in other ways. I don't think that's specifically about him being Sikh - I doubt many of them even know what that means - but a more general objection to the "brown guy in the funny foreign hat" (and yes, that was reportedly a real quote!).

I've no doubt other medical professionals face the same kind of thing for all sorts of "reasons" but I doubt many of the objections are as rational or thought out as the concept the OP suggests, whether the fundamental grounds for objection are religion, race, gender or anything else. Discrimination is very rarely rational.
