Suppose Americans had to give up our assault type weapons and awoke to learn the military has taken over abolishing the right to vote and dissent. The Constitution and Bill of Rights have been dissolved. How would citizens retrieve their original way of life with all rights restored? If they could, how long would it take?

:rofl

Let's do this again: What happens if they hadn't given up their assault-type rifles? I see very little difference.

What would make anyone think this is possible besides radical paranoia

Untrained citizens with small arms have negligible combat value. Ironically enough, you would actually be better off promoting unsecured borders to smuggle in the real military hardware if you wanted to have weapons to fight the government.(Not that I am suggesting such a policy) If you are worried about government tyranny, work to prevent the undermining of civil liberties, not delusional fantasies based on crappy Hollywood movies.

This is a what-if scenario. Suppose Aliens take over the White House and we must take orders from people from a foreign world. It's the same concept. I'd also like to point out that there was an assault rifle ban under Bill Clinton that lasted from 1994 to 2004 and there was no military coup or dissolving of our rights (unless you count President Bush passing the Patriot Act)

He said "assault weapons" though, sure given how few assault rifles are owned there would be little difference made.

But regarding "assault weapons," Considering the number of veterans and the % of the military that would refuse to follow orders against an armed resistance, I see quite a difference.

Any military or government authorized by the Constitution that says the constitution is abolished or that I no longer have my rights is no longer my government or military and I don't have to listen to a damn thing they have to say. I don't have any Assault Weapons to confiscate, nor do would I turn them in if I did, but without them high powered rifles, shotguns and handguns would go a long way to retrieving a Constitutional way of life.

How long? No idea... but civil wars are bloody and often brief.

There's only one way. War. It's hard to say how long it would take, or if they could even pull it off. I do know that if a situation like this were to happen, I would be spending much more time at the bench, polishing up my skills. ;)

It would never happen, however hypothetically speaking if it did it would turn into a civil war and the military would facture when military people choose sides so both sides would be heavily armed.

…and as ugly as politics is getting these days the sides turn out to be red states vs. blue states and after the blue states win several of the early battles since they start it in the first place, eventually the red states get organized and are victorious over the blue states and then the leaders of the post war government led by President Rand Paul reduces the size of government and helps put in place policies that help American companies grow and be successful again. The economy booms again and everyone lives happily ever after. :2razz:

Dude if you really think assault weapons will deter the US military... Do private citizens have access to WMDs, fighter planes, rocket launchers?

The problem with an armed population is that while they can be used to defend democracy and freedom from a tyrannical regime, they can also be used to INSTALL tyranny and fascism.

Considering many gun enthusiasts are only slightly committed to freedom, democracy, equality, justice, and liberty, we should take the value of an armed population to defend liberty and freedom with a grain of salt.

Amazingly, we had them in the 60's and 70's, even deployed some of those to Vietnam (don't believe we sent WMDs, but maybe). We had military superiority out the ass, but guess what, in the end, Saigon was renamed Ho Chi Min City.

It's a good point, but I doubt anyone here wants to endure the same thing and live in underground tunnels, especially for sake of clinging to a few thousand assault weapons.

Guns aren't right or wrong. They have no conscience. They are merely tools. They can be used as weapons of war or to preserve the peace.

They can be tools of liberation or weapons of bigoted genocide.

I'd obviously expect you to come in with your assault rifle and protect me.

The Vietnamese were not untrained civilians with rifles. The NVA was a well organized military fully equipped with tanks, aircraft, and artillery.

The Greek resistance disagree.

The Greek resistance had no chance of ever removing the Nazi occupation alone. I'm not insulting them, its merely the reality of the situation. The best they could accomplish was to try and divert resources to allow the Allies to win on the field.

The towns of Karditsa, Grevena, Trikkala, Metsovon and others were liberated by July. The Axis forces and their collaborators remained in control only of the main towns and the connecting roads, with the interior left to the andartes. This was "Free Greece", stretching from the Ionian Sea to the Aegean and from the borders of the German zone in Macedonia to Boeotia, a territory of 30,000 km² and 750,000 inhabitants.

Hence why it was in the end the British army that finished them off, indeed if they hadn't applied so much energy to fighting each other they may have liberated the rest of the country.

Life is very uncertain, and its happened before

Besides you don't wear a seat-belt because you expect to get into a crash, you wear a Rustbelt as a precaution, though i might add that any group coming to power with unsavory intentions would already have an effective apparatus at their disposal

in 1776 the state-of-the-art standard issue military fire-arms
were much the same as the civilian population had,
NOW the picture is much different and .. just my $0.02 on the subject
is that if we want CHANGE, we are going to have to make it happen
in some other way than by armed rebellion.

How about mass economic boycott of certain sectors of the
Consumerist scene?

I doubt that the House Un-American Activities Committes decision that the allegations were credible was a result of a leftist bias. Even so surely security services who can spy on, abduct and kill (if they are outside the country-and brown skinned) whomever they want would be capable of taking over? Again that's not to say that they will or even that they are likely too but that they could.

Sure, because no country with an enormous array of military capabilities consisting of tanks, aircraft, and extensive Command and Control, Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance abilities have ever been effected by a force armed with mostly just rifles and improvised explosive devices.
