Map shows world’s ‘most racist’ countries (and the answers may surprise you)

Spending years next to people you hate? Really? C'mon.

the intent isn't to socialize, it's to get an education. Not to mention, large foreign student groups like Indians, Pakistanis', the chinese, and japanese can easily keep to their own communities

But they cannot live in isolation. Remember the context of the thread. I'm not disagreeing that many of them do keep to their groups, at least those only here for a year. But those who commit to the 4 years do branch off. The one year study abroad is quite frightening for many people of all races. I'm looking at the 4 year students rather than the 1 year.

Most racist people can't. They still need to do things like go to school, work, etc

I'm fully aware of the context. I just see no bases to claim going to school abroad would work as anything resembling proof about racial or nationalist views

they really have nothing to do with each other. In fact, one Pakistani I know has a particularly vile attitudes towards "anglos" and america in particular, but that didn't stop him from getting his PHD in the states, starting back with even his undergrad work.

It was just going to school here offered numerous benefits that outweighed his dislike for white people and americans. And let's not even get into his fits over the numerous jewish teachers he had to deal with

And if they were so racist, they'd stay home.

If they were so racist, why would they come here for 4 years, live near people they hate when they can go to school at home and not live by people they hate? 4 years commitment is a long time for such large numbers of allegedly racist people.

Can't agree there. At least when it comes to the Japanese. Know plenty of them who had no problem with Americans.

THAT must have been funny.

You're making an assumption here without much backing and ignoring people pursue education for reasons beyond socializing

1) I'm not assuming they are racist, I am challenging that pursuing an education in a foreign country even begins to indicate they are not racist.

Yes, I know plenty of japanese, indian, sri lankan, and pakistani students who I doubt are racists as well. But I know plenty of others that loath being here.

Which is my point. Where you go to school isn't exactly about who you get to socialize with

I would accept their methodology, maybe, if Russia were not moderate purple on their map. Granted, I haven't been there since 1985. But from everything my friends and relatives tell me, not much has changed in that department: the place is still the heavyweight world champion in racism, slightest ethnic differences being sufficient for most virulent bigotry. I think, the source of the mischaracterization may be semantic: Russians are used to the word "racism" referring only to problematic relationships between "major races", like the Caucasians vs. the "Negroid" Africans. Since there are virtually no Africans in Russia, outside of university centers, the question about "neighbors of another race" is meaningless. It doesn't mean that the nominally Caucasian Jews, Uzbeks or Armenians feel very welcome in a randomly chosen Russian neighborhood.

Perhaps, but it is hard to believe that many allegedly racists people would go to a country full of people they hate in such numbers to spend years of their lives living with people they hate. Especially when there are dozens of perfectly good schools in Japan that don't have large numbers of people they allegedly hate.

1) I'm not assuming they are racist, I am challenging that pursuing an education in a foreign country even begins to indicate they are not racist.

That itself isn't my point. It's the sheer number of them doing so.

True, but if the Japanese were so racist, why do tens of thousands of them spend years in the US getting an education?

I just don't buy that the Japanese are that racist.

Okay, let's see what controversy this stirs up.

Racism is a highly subjective word, not to mention is redundantly misused.

Anything and everything can be construed as "racist" if there are two different races involved.

It seems anytime a minority doesn't get his/her way there is always someone screaming "racism."
