I have no clue why so many people are fixated on spending tens-of-thousands of dollars on caskets, burial plots, and head stones so that their body can be buried.

Why aren't more people, or most people cremated?

Why are so many turned off by the idea of cremation?

My mother was cremated and her ashes were "buried" in a memorial garden at the church she attended for over 30 years.
I find that idea absolutely wonderful, and peaceful.

I'd like my ashes spread into the ocean in some place warm and sunny.

However, I know plenty of people who find the idea of cremation almost offensive.

Why is that? What's the fixation with burial? Why would you want such a thing?

Dig a hole and put me in it. No casket or anything silly like that. Wrap me in a shroud, if you feel fancy.

I don't see any reason why my death should cost lots of money, or impact the environment negatively.

I'm not turned off by cremation. Just seems like a lot of energy and fuel to spend incinerating a dead person when nature has a way to take care of bodies all by herself.

"But the worms will eat your body!!!!!!!!??????????"

I told my wife to do whatever she wants. If I'm dead I positively won't give a ****. Though I'd prefer they cremated me so that they don't waste their time visiting my grave and can move on with their lives.

I have however seen something that I think is rather cool that I might do:

Use the nutrients of your dead body to feed a tree, the circle of life continues.

AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now that's f'n wicked cool. Thanks.

Cremation, scatter of bit of my ashes with Mom & Dad, some to the Caribbean ocean, and the rest in my garden.

Remember me as I was when I was enjoying life, not as an empty body lying in state.

Some may think of the millions incinerated against their will and find burial of the body more proper.

Personally, I think it rather morbid that they paint up your dead body and people all come to stare at it.

Re-animate me as a zombie and let me loose.

If I didn't have any surviving family I would be fine with dedicating my body to science. But I understand how some people wouldn't like the idea of med students poking around at their dead naked husband or father. So take what organs of mine that can help people and then cremate me or bury me in a hole like SaM mentioned.

It's been just recently that the Catholic Church allowed cremation. For I don't know how long, a priest wouldn't perform a funeral mass over cremated remains. Then the Catholic Church sold out most of their cemetery plots and anticipated their ability to keep building beautiful buildings for inside burial vaults was limited.

So God said it was okay to be cremated.

Old traditions die hard.

I hope my family finds a way to dispose of my rotting body in the cheapest, most sanitary way possible after any and all body parts that can be harvested have been harvested - in fact, if some teaching hospital wants the corpse to play around with, all the better. It matters not a bit to me how it's done.

There was a comic book writer, Mark Gruenwald, who had his body cremated and mixed with ink to reprint a story he had written. I thought that was pretty cool, although as I recall, it didn't print well.

Most likely cremation. I don't like the idea of leaving trash behind.

Personally, I don't give a damn. Throw my body in a ditch for all I care, I'm dead, I won't know the difference.

If you are cremated, you will not be able to arise from the dead when the Messiah shows up.

Since there's no rational reason to think such a thing is real anyhow, what difference does it make?

Just because you don't agree with the BILLIONS of people who believe otherwise, does not make you correct in any place but your own mind.

Argumentum ad populum is a logical fallacy for a reason. It doesn't matter how many people believe a thing, it only matters if that thing is factually true.

Billions? Really? Billions?

What billions?

And if you're like 98 years old, and riddled with cancer, and mostly blind and deaf, incontinent,.. why the hell would you want that body back?

I don't know many people at all who believe in "rising from the dead" and inhabiting their old body.

Most bodies decompose and turn to slush/dust after not too long.

Perception=Reality.

Opinion=Opinion. It is not a fact that murder is wrong. It is not a fact that there is no sentient life anywhere but Earth. It is not a fact that facts are facts (mostly).

The use of Latin does not strengthen an argument.

In many places, even if you are going to be cremated they (ie the state) make you buy a casket. My mother-in-law wanted to be cremated so we honored her wishes. the damn "cremation casket" cost more than the "burial caskets" and the freakin urns were almost as high as a burial plot in the cemetary.

sadly, most states require that your remains be placed in a casket and then the casket be put in a concrete vault before burial.

Well, maybe not billions. Just Christians and Jews. Not sure about Muslims.

If you don't want your body back, then cremation is a practical option.

Notice how popular zombies are lately?
