So in emphasizing a total commitment to something, people sometimes use the phrase "... with all my heart, mind, and soul."

Okay .. so just what are each of these, the human 1) heart, 2) mind, and 3) soul.

How are they manifest?

Where in us are they located?

How are each of these three different from each other?

What is the function of each?

Inquiring hearts, minds, and souls want to know.

Heart = emotions.
Mind = logical and other mentally based functions tend to focus on it (IE: thinking about it frequently)
Soul = your overall self (a bit melodramatic, really - but I guess a combination of the other two)

had to come up with something--sets of three carry more weight than 2 or 4 or 1 or 10

I'll agree with this definition and say location is the head.
Soul is possibly your spiritual or digital self.

Heart is will and determination
Mind is intellectual capacity and ability to conceptualize
Soul is feelings and emotions

At least that's my take on it. ;)

Yes - for people who believe in a spiritual soul it would be your essence, I guess.

Heart- Emotions, what they "feel" is right. Can involve moral obligations.
Mind- Logic, what they "think" is right. Involves past experiences.
Soul- Transcendence, what they "believe" is right. By using the word soul, they are emphasizing that the cause is beyond their own, whether it's the cause of the supernatural or just a cause of the collective.

Those are only my takes on the question. However, all three are interconnected, not physically, but in a sense that all three can effect the other. "Again, not saying the soul exists or can alter the mind."

I'm going to have to play the atheist card and say that the heart, mind, soul are all located in the brain. Excluding the heart organ, of course.

That could be the case, but I think he was asking more along the lines of how they are expressed in the human. Iow, is my mind only my thoughts. Is my heart expressed in my feelings, is my soul something that doesn't really exist, or if it does, what is its function or role in relation to the individual. (just rambling thoughts ;))

Still fasting, so I'm having trouble with some of these concepts. I believe that if I bumped my head hard enough, I could lose traits like empathy (heart), and become an overall meaner person (!). Similarly, my thinking (mind) could become impaired. The soul, I guess, would be my overall personality, which encompasses knowledge and various character traits.

Was it King Henry the VIII who bumped his head and became a bastard? Or Caligula? Will look it up tomorrow.

The concepts are poetic metaphors. The mind normally symbolizes logic and reason. The heart is associated with strong emotions. The soul often takes the same place as the heart, but also is used to describes a persons "true" self in a suitably vague and mysterious manner. You can find the concepts discussed in literature and movies at infinite length.

One should not confuse them with the chemical impulses in the brain that actually define who a person is in reality.

I'm not much of a poet, but I do understand the metaphors. There's also the 'gut', which I guess represents instinct.

The heart is an organ. It pumps blood through your arteries and veins.
The mind is your mental experience. It is nonphysical, and we cannot prove its existence. I can only be aware of my own mind.
The soul is allegedly the immortal essence of a being that will continue to exist after the physical body has stopped functioning. We cannot observe souls at all, and we really have no reason to suppose they exist.

I don't like abstract interpretations like the saying implies and others presented here.

The heart is the organ that pumps blood through our body.
The mind is the function of our brains, and forms the basis of consciousness.
Souls do not exist and are pure superstition, IMO.

The symbolic meanings have already been explained by others, but that's my take.

No such thing as a soul. Heart is just that part of the mind that operates one's emotional intelligence. All these terms are basically figurative.
