I am fond of Fukurokuju, one of the Seven Lucky Gods of Japan. He is the god of happiness, wisdom, and longevity. I often give netsuke in his image to elder friends/family to wish them a long and happy life.

There's also Hotei (aka 'The Laughing Buddha'), who aside from Fuku, is probably the coolest looking deity on the planet. Typically represented in gold, it is an Asian custom to rub his fat belly for good luck. There's something about a short, bald, obese god walking around with his belly sticking out that just makes me smile.

Do you have a favourite god?

I guess I'll play.

I like Odin.

Sounds like Valkyrie Profile - I loved that rpg game!

Odin would be my favourite Norse god. Despite his power, he constantly sought wisdom and knowledge. And he was a god with a sense of humour, mischief, and possessed an unparalleled wit. He would frequently disguise himself and play pranks on his fellow gods, including the hot-headed Thor.

Kali. That girl has some serious boobies.

My mom and dad. After all, they gave me life.

Depends on Kali's mood. You could end up with his male incarnation, Daikokuten, who happens to resemble Super Mario.

Is there some particular point, that is one that makes any sense, in asking atheists what their favorite god is?

Because frankly it comes across as a sort of mockery.

Dionysos, the party god and Aphrodite, the whore goddess....................

I'm not sure what you're trying to say. I thought this was a rather benign thread, and my question was sincere. It's not like I asked atheists which god they worship.

You may enjoy Nietzsche's book "The Birth Of Tragedy", while it's his worst writings IMO, it's an analysis on Dionysus.

I'll have to reread it because I don't remember anything specific about it.................

Technically,I'm an agnostic, not an atheist, but if anyone doesn't mind,I'd like to join in.

My favorite deities are Crom, the God of Conan the Barbarian and Eris,Goddess of Chaos ( the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy version) and Foamy the Squirrel.

I think my favorite god would have to be one whose system of human development, justice and compassion would be one with whom I could agree.

Therefore, I could not agree with any god who created a Hell where unbelievers are permanently lodged. I could not agree with a god who valued faith, let alone had made faith a major component of positive human development. Such gods would be categorically scratched from my list.

I think a god who established reincarnation as a way for the 'soul' to progress to betterment would appeal to me. Being reincarnated to experience the woes you bestow upon others makes sense to me from a punishment standpoint, as it fits the 'crime'. It is a path to positive human development, and a compassionate one at that. It need not involve faith at all, if the god were willing to submit to verification of his or her existence. Since I see no value in developing faith, I see no reason a loving god would not be willing to do so.

Well, in short, I don't think any god fits my bill, so I can't think of one being my favorite. It is all too intertwined to leave out any of my requirements.

Why would this conversation be restricted to atheists?

And in the Religious Discussion forum at that... good point. On that basis...

Moderator's Warning:
This thread would be much more at home on Atheist Avenue....errum, that is, Philosophy...

Except that it's about religion, not philosophy. I restricted it to atheists because they are able to chooses objectively. I broke no rules, but hey, whatever Moderator Goshin says.
