In the big picture, knowing a little something about Cesar Chavez is more valuable than knowing a lot about Easter. Since Google is an information device, it makes sense that they would chose a real historical hero over the myth in their doodle. But, of course, the Christians had a cow about it on their side of the blogosphere. Which, to a thinking man, only raises more eyebrows.

The more I think about it, the more I think the whole Easter thing is totally stupid. Celebrate spring and fertility already. But, drop the homoerotic BS of that dude in a diaper hanging from a cross. It's morbid and disgusting.

It's also embarrassing to live in a country where almost half the people think that the resurrection is real. My god, here we are in the 21st century and people cling to myths from year freaking 35. How crazy is that?

It's just silly.

People like you make me sick.

Who the hell are you to denigrate anyone's religion? Those who believe get comfort when their hearts are breaking, strength when they're afraid, courage when they are dying. When they are sobbing their hearts out because they've lost a child? They hold onto the hope that their little one is sitting on the right hand of God. Why the **** do people think they have to make fun of religion just because they don't believe themselves???

Edit: Tell your dying mother she's been an asshole her whole life for believing in a guy who died in a diaper. Disgusting.

1. After not eating meat or fish for 40 days and gorging myself on steak, empanadas, shrimp and other amazing food yesterday, I can safely say that Easter is not, nor ever will be, silly. It's one of the best days of the year. Everyone should participate. Maybe that's why you're so upset - because you didn't get to participate in the feast.

2. I consider myself a "cultural" Christian moreso than a religious Christian which means that while I celebrate the holidays for the importance I believe they hold and value many of the principles of Christianity, I'm ambivalent about the Resurrection and the true nature of Jesus. However, I find your denigration of Jesus and Easter to be comically ridiculous. You sound at least as hysterical as the people who were upset about Google's decision.

3. I laughed when I saw Chavez on Google's logo. You best bet they did that on purpose and I can't even hate. A+ trolling.

The whole idea that it's any kind of controversy is stupid. "Google didn't pick my religious holiday for their thing. I'm being persecuted!"

People celebrating it is even worse. "Hey, look at Google making fun of Christians. Persecuting is fun."

I guess I should have had a cow on the sweet old lady at Tom Thumb who told me to have a "very blessed Easter".

I don't get the offense. Did you personally get to spend the day engaged in activities acceptable to you? If yes, then why the hell do you care if everybody else neglected to mimic your choices? Who cares what Google does with their logo, regardless of the holiday/intent? Unless I can interact with it (a la the Olympic games), it really only serves to remind me of birthdays I'd otherwise forget (I'm still waiting for a George Carlin logo, btw).

And besides, Jesus' resurrection day can't even fall consistently on the same day. It isn't Chavez' fault (or Google's), that they decided to celebrate the event on March 30th this year.

Let's see, other than the fact that I personally believe religion is what keeps us from developing cold fusion and owning cars that fly, instead of witnessing half the country praying to God that the candles stay lit, there is nothing wrong with it. I guess.

I'm with Maggie in wondering what possible solace could someone gain discouraging the hope of others. Most people of faith "like me" don't necessarily worship, go to church or understand and believe all of scriptures. It's the idea that some higher power may be able to help our suffering in this world and maybe some day reunite us with loved ones. How is that so horrible?

Because there are no hover crafts, damn it!

You are a very special person with very special needs. I pity people like you. It is a shame that mental degeneration can get to such a degree and people not be submitted for medical attention.

Isn't that bizarre?

I love science and don't think it's in conflict with a primal energy or conscious life force. We surely don't understand everything.

1. I'd rarely bring something like this up outside the acceptable debating arena. It's not like I began this thread over in Kool-Aid-Ville, er, Religious Discussion. I would most certainly not insult some poor server who is stuck working on a beautiful Spring afternoon.

2. I'm offended that my country which desperately needs to find solutions to real problems is stuck believing retarded myths. It irks me further when the myth-buyers vote in candidates who pander to their silly notions of how the world works.

3. I'd rather us simply celebrate Spring for the sun's resurrection than some make believe nonsense akin to Santa Claus scooting around on a sleigh pulled by reindeer.

Tell that to the people arguing that evolution is a myth and saying the earth is 6,000 years old.

Ya know, it's funny. People in this thread who believe in God contradict the hateful bigotry you keep spewing and instead of acknowledging them you just double down.

I don't defend that kind of nonsense. And don't think you know my mind because you might be surprised how much of religion I don't like. But I don't run around saying nasty things like "retarded myths" because nobody with half a brain will listen to another word you say. Try some intellect and civility if you want to seriously discuss beliefs and you'll probably learn/teach something and actually have some fun.

I think the concept of "God" sending his "only son" down to earth to die for our "sins" is totally retarded. Sorry.

Not post #9. He thinks I need psychiatric help. Only in crazyland would someone who does not believe in a myth be asked to seek medical help. No?

How about this translation. God came to die just like you will to have an equal share in humanity. Would you rather have a God who bosses you around or calls you friend?

Learning to deal with things as though there was no God would be best. But, if this "God" thing were true, why would he have to troll a bunch of Jews and Romans so that they crucify him? He comes down to basically get himself killed, and this is how he learns to love us better?

You don't already deal with things as though there was no God? What's His name, where do you see or hear Him? Being bossed around huh?

You call someone expressing their opinion about peace and love trolling? I guess nobody should've had the freedom to express themselves, except the Romans and Jews? The choice to kill Him was there's, not His. He gave them an option. You have a funny idea about freedom when it suits your purpose.

How about He came down because the religious authorities of the day (the Pharisees) had it all wrong, and He wanted to set the record straight and reform how He was worshipped.

The getting killed bit may not have been intentional, though realistically He probably saw it coming. Not too many people challenged the power of the Pharisees and the Romans and lived to talk about it.

He's "God". Either he knew what would happen when he trolled them, or he is not Omnipotent, Omnipresent, and Omniscient. See, the center does not hold.

So what if He knew, how did that change their choice? He gave them free will and did not take it away regardless of what He knew. You don't know God's mind or what He knows, do you?

He could have just flooded them...again. Oh, that's right, he said he would not repeat that particular deed. What's a God to do?

I agree. Whether Jesus was divine or not, he probably saw this coming, and it was probably not intentional,

It's an interesting trick, knowing what someone will do even though they have free will. So, God came down, knowing they would kill him, he then did everything in his power to ensure that this would happen, running around all over the region pissing off the established order, doing all that to somehow "save us"? What were we saved from? Him, IIRC. The new rule becomes: "Believe in the Jesus man and I won't damn you to hell".
