What happened to actually discussing philosophy in the Philosophy Forum? Now it's just people fighting about religion, which I believe we have a forum for that in the first place. We need to get back to phlilosophies to enrich the mind, not quarrels of religion to sate our tongues.

Yes, I understand that many philosophies are displayed by religion or themselves display religion, but these threads on religion have about argued themselves out and have become rather boring to me in particular. I'm not sure if anyone else feels this way, but about one out of three are not about religion. This bogles my mind. We have a religion forum, and we need to keep religion there.

Now a question if you will:

Can rather low amounts of sleep cause madness over time?
I think so. I find that when I have almost no sleep for several days at a time people tend to avoid me, and I have decided that they avoid me because I become much more irritable, hostile, and erratic in making decisions. People usually tend mark me mad, but when I get way more sleep than usual, no such notions are apparently entertained.

Criticism of religion goes into the philosophy forum.
Philosophy discussions go into the philosophy forum.

Discussions of religious meaning, context, or application go in the religion forum.

There was an announcement about this that explains it all.

And if you want more friendly philosophy then create a few threads.

Ok.

Did you read the bottom, because there was a philosophical question at the bottom that you didn't answer.

Sure:

I believe so, yeah. I get a little loopy when I go through bouts of insomnia, and studies of thought pattern in those who are deprived of sleep indicate that people tend to go a little off the reservation within the first three days.

Thanks, just wanted a second oppinion on that.

Guaranteed, if there were a subforum catering specifically to Atheist discussion, it would be empty.

They have no interest in discussion. Those guys need their whipping post. They have nothing to say, otherwise.

They have no interest in discussion. Those guys need their 'oppressor'.

What is there to discuss about Atheism, specifically? It really only makes sense to discuss it as it relates to religion or religious philosophy. Outside of that context, it'd be a discussion of what isn't, and those aren't very common.

How about a third? I worked as a camp counselor and part if that job was going constantly at 100 mph trying to get kids motivated and having fun. Eventually you do start getting hostile. Other people get loopy. My girlfriend laughs...like a mad woman.

You also get sick easier. The body needs rest.

To the contrary. We call it philosophy.

But the difference is, the Theists among us have no desire to 'prove how silly' Atheists are. For them, to believe is enough.

The brain requires sleep in the same way that a computer must be shut down or restarted from time to time. The body needs sleep to repair itself. The brain however...is still largely a mystery. But not sleeping over a long enough period will do more than make you crazy...it'll kill you.

Seemed more of a psychological question to me.

It does seem that religious belief is under attack here, and as a result I don't bother engaging too much - not that such lack of engagement is a big loss to anyone else. Sleep deprivation causes all kinds of physical, mental and emotional problems. Do whatever is necessary to get adequate sleep every night, and don't worry about problems you don't have. It is helpful though to be able to recognize problems caused by inadequate rest in others, but most of the time I find that people suffering from lack of sleep are the first to admit it. How would you feel about climbing on a plane piloted by someone who's only had 5 hours of sleep each night for a week?

Dissent against religion was banned from the religion forum so people wouldn't get butthurt.

Lack of sleep overtime (assuming significant lack of sleep) can indeed cause a deterioration of mental awareness and processing. It can mimic madness well.

My favorite example of how silly the religion/philosophy forum split was one of the first threads posted after it took place. Wake posted a thread in the religion forum called "Do Demons Exist?" People who said yes and related crazy stories were fine. People who said no with any more zeal than a one word post were infracted and thread banned. The religion forum is seldom home to much actual discussion. Some threads, like "Is God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit 3 separate entities?" is perfectly fine for a religion forum. That's a question that non theists have absolutely nothing to say about, and the religious can debate between themselves all day long. But threads like "Does God Create Weather Patterns?" or "Wherever Religious Belief Is Waning Society Is In Decline Too" essentially ask yes or no questions and the rules of the setting only tolerate one answer.

The philosophy forum primarily exists so that actual discussion about religion can take place, while the religion forum exists so that theists can have a bubble they can hide in. By all means, though, post more philosophy threads in the philosophy forum.

Lack of sleep over time can cause hallucinations and make it difficult for coherent thought. That seems to be more a science or health question than a philosophy one, though.

Kinda difficult to avoid any tension, when terms like 'aliens in the sky' are bandied around. Not to mention the frequent claims of low intelligence and weakness of character, applied so casually to the faithful.

If not to openly goad, then why employ such incendiary language?

Kinda sad to play passive-aggressive.

Isn't that a medical question rather than a philosophical one (which would be somewhat ironic)? I believe the very simple answer is "yes", though I'm not sure "madness" is a helpful term in the context. There has been lots of studies about sleep deprivation with some quite extreme outcomes as I recall.

Sleep deprevation or days with little or no sleep do not cause "madness" - what they do cause is a dropping of the defenses and an opening up of the true character of a person. When fully cognizant and well rested, you have the capacity to cover up your true feelings and be pleasant around others - with lack of sleep, that capacity is lessened, and you simply react to situations and those around you in your base, animalistic ways.

Wasn't there that radio DJ who stayed awake for like, ten days or something? He was hallucinating and stuff. He was never the same again, apparently. I realise this is anecdotal, but I can't imagine anyone firing on all cylinders after sleep deprivation of that magnitude.

To each their own.
You go mad while for others ...

The biographies of exceptional achievers suggest that the one thing they all seem to have in common is the lack of sleep. Indeed, outstdanding leading figures of science, sports, business, politics, and the arts tend to differ in their IQ, creativity, and physical stamina, but they are typically as likely to sleep very little hours, and the common reason for that is of course personality. In short, super-achievers are always highly-ambitious, and the underlying drives or motives for success may vary from one individual to another (e.g., recognition or fame, power, freedom, hedonism, knowledge, etc), but when it comes to personality their profiles are remarkably similar: they are highly motivated and ambitious people.

Yes, it can- at least on a temporary basis. We need sleep, and especially REM sleep, in order to function fully, as far as mental and emotional health goes. This is why sleep deprivation as a method of torture has been used regularly- it causes changes in perception and ability to rationalize.

lack of sleep just makes me sleepy ... sorry ...

Days on end, of lack of sleep, makes you more than just sleepy. Sleep deprivation is serious stuff.

Yes, it is. Ask an insomniac or someone who loves one.

Killjoys.

Nothing funnier than watching people walk into door frames and break their noses.

There's a lot to discuss if you take atheism as a given.

For example, whether there are natural rights that people enjoy in a universe in which there's no divinity.

If religion is taken as a given there is a divine greater order - though there are still arguments as to which religion adheres to that greater divine order.

If atheism is taken as a given, then if there is a greater order then we must discuss what that greater order may be - of which there are still arguments about.

And that even supposes that there is a greater order than that which man makes for himself, which is not necessarily a given.
