Life: What is the Purpose?

if we want to answer from a deep perspective ,life is love

if we just focus on our evolutional background ,life is increasing

so , make love ,not war

The meaning of life... is to reproduce.

Life is an ongoing experiment by aliens to see how fast we can screw ourselves and then the planet up. When I was younger I thought that life (anyones) had a purpose. Now I am not so sure. There are too many forces at work and its hard as you go along to see any clarity in things.

And here I thought it was to deliver a paperclip to the aliens on Titan. ;)

Maybe I'm just dealing with a problem that can't be cured with medicine. I'm ambitious, impatient, and determined.

On one hand it's good to be grateful for what one has... there are many suffering and dying before the age of 10 because their drinking water is found in a muddy puddle filled with parasites...

...on the other, if one wants so, so much.... is it wrong to try and make your dreams a reality? Then that gnawing occurs again. Even when you have it all, you feel... what does it truly matter?

Since you got TS'd I'll tell you what the darkness is. It's a lack of self confidence. Takes time and humility to know and like yourself.

I feel there is no purpose to life. No meaning.

...when you're born, you arrive in a world filled with life and vibrancy. As you emerge from your mother's womb, you know nothing. You feel things for the first time, and as your eyes focus, you feel uncertainty and fear. You cry. As a newborn child, you're born into a vast and wild world.

Before birth, you were not told what your purpose was. You weren't notified what meaning you would have, or what the point of your life would be.

As you grew, you became more conscious. You began to acquire the ability to talk, through learning. You began to understand things more clearly. You were introduced to new beliefs and ideas. Influenced to great extents by other around you. With time you incorporated those ideas. You began to sift through these ideas yourself, deciding upon which ideas you wanted to hold, and creaing for yourself a meaning for your life. Because influence is everything, you continued to learn and grow. You sought knowledge and wisdom. You yearned for the truth. You wanted to know your limits. A gem is not polished without rubbing, nor a man perfected without trials.

But even after all this, the biting question gnaws at you forever. "What is the point to my life?" Do we just create meaning? After all you've been through, there can be no way of knowing what the purpose of your life is...

Whose meaning?
Your parents'? Your spouse's? Your congressman's? Walmart's?

The meaning of your life, to me, is to mildly entertain me as I browse the web.
If you want something better than that, you're gonna have to come up with it on your own.

The meaning of life?

Hang on and hope you don't hit anything.

No they are already here. You have heard before someone "they know the answer" or its their idea or thier fault right? Well they is them.

Why must there be a purpose? Some here need to read a bit of Camus, specifically The Myth of Sisyphus. You can search and try to find one (and maybe even think you did), but in the end, there is no purpose.

In Christianity, we are here to demonstrate and bear witness to the Truth. In Buddhism, we are here to attain enlightenment, in which we manifest True Mind, but before we attain it, we can do nothing but manifest True Mind anyway. In Taoism, "Those who know do not tell" and "Those who tell do not know."

No purpose, no meaning, apart from the one you create, I might add.

There is meaning.

Hats.

Perhaps if you wore more hats you could understand the meaning of life.

You create the meaning and you create the purpose. I don't believe there's a puppet master controlling the world and assigning me a purpose. I carve my own way in life.

To me the only meaning of life is to enjoy every minute to the fullest, with the people you love. If smoking weed and playing xbox is what makes your life complete, and it's sustainable, then awesome, more power to you. If going out and creating great things and striving and always fighting to be better is what makes you happy, then also go for it. After being in the Army 7 long years I just wanted to be the former, smoking weed and playing xbox. But after a few months I started to get bored and unhappy, because I wasn't challenging myself or striving.

I guess all I'm saying is, life is short, it's precious, and it'll be gone in the blink of an eye. No one can tell you what your purpose is, or what is right or wrong in your life decisions. So use every moment to maximize your own happiness. That is the true point of life.

My view is probably going to be different than a lot of other people's, but when I learned how to meditate and quiet the mind I realized that there is always supreme peace and contentment underlying everything. There is a love in simply being. It's the logical monkey mind that likes to ask questions and look for linear answers. A simple breathing meditation was all it took for me to sink into Emptiness and realize that nothing is wrong. Everything is okay. You're going to be just fine.

The purpose of life is this very moment. That's it. Anything more and you're projecting into something that doesn't exist. You can create meaning but ultimately it's just telling yourself a story that is unverified. I've learned that the key to contentment is to stop telling yourself stories and just stay grounded in the moment. Look at the world around you will tell you what it is that's going on inside you, and vice versa. If you're only in this moment and you don't like what you see, then make changes.

As for the challenges in life... they will keep pushing your buttons until you realize what it is that you don't yet want to know about yourself. In doing so, they will point you to your freedom every time.

You are half the way there.
Don't stop, and you just may get there.

Stop feeling, start thinking. The very ability to think that you demonstrably have is amazing, isn't it? Isn't it much more significant than your glandular responses to the dreary routine of daily life?

And yes, we DO create meaning. Who else is supposed to do it?

We create meaning, that doesn't entail meaning exists. There have been millions of fictional characters, that doesn't mean they actually exist.

"Meaning" does not "exist" like stones or turkeys. It is a mental attribute - a tag we attach to life or its paticulars. Doesn't make it less "real" or less important. Your favorite fictional character probably has taught you more than all stones and turkeys in the universe ever could. And your favorite song ceratinly does exist, replicating itself in your brain, and many other brains (unless your taste in music is really unique) and other media, like paper, laser discs, etc - although it is not something you can hold in your hand, or smell, or kill by hitting it with a stone.

False. I can see my favorite song. I also don't read fiction any more. The last "fiction" I read was Thus Spoke Zarathustra, I think and that was 3 - 4 years ago. And no, stones and turkeys have much more education value in them than a fictional character ever could.

Hey, if a random turkey is a better tutor for you than Don Quixote, Jesus Christ or Hamlet - that's fine with me. Although, in combination with your ability to see your favorite song , I would recommend blocking, ever so gently, those pesky dopamine receptors...Just sayin'. :)

Neither one of those are tutors. I don't need tutors; I have myself. You also never specified "tutoring" so you are being quite dishonest. If you don't accept that I can see my favorite song in "Spotify," "iTunes," etc. then you can also hear it. Those pesky senses...
