Should we feel bad for mocking Muhammed?

They were quite different, though. One was a warlord who lead violent armies against all who stood in his path and had people murdered for mocking him, while one adamantly refused any political position, and never killed anybody at all.

Sure, people are free to either mock both or defend both, but they are certainly not the same as far as their actions are concerned.

And yet you both ultimately worship the same god.

The reason people are inconsistent is because they revere one and not the other. It doesn't matter what one or the other did, what matters is that they take offense, yet hypocritically engage in teh same behaviors without caring about others taking offense.

It's a glass houses, thrown stones thing. One can like Jesus more than mohammed or vice versa, as one would expect. One can be critical of one without being critical of the other without hypocrisy, but the mocking and taking offense thing doesn't work the same way.

Ok.
Nobody can force anybody to do anything on the internet. You can do whatever the hell you want and nobody can stop you.

Post child porn with your real name and address attached. See how long it takes someone to stop you.

Because in modern times Christians hardly ever respond to such mockery with suicide bombings or beheadings.... Islam has a rather large minority of extremists who will and do.

The real irony is when people get offended by Jesus being mocked, but turn around and mock Mohammed or vice versa.

I don't mind consistent people who mock both or get offended by the mocking of both.

I've never seen a muslim mock Jesus other than to say he was a prophet, not the son of god. Muslims have a respect for Jesus.

If Christians could respond, they would. However, Christianity has been tempered over the years by secular society, which doesn't allow them to go crazy like they used to. Islam, at least in the Middle East, does not have that secular society to keep them under control. Don't fool yourself that if Christians suddenly found themselves able to act with impunity, they wouldn't be out killing infidels with the best of them.

As a Christian, I disagree with this assessment strongly. We aren't living in the middle ages anymore.

So look at what happens to Christianity, say in Africa, where they routinely murder people for Christ and pass laws demanding death for gays as a "gift to Christianity" in Uganda. In Nigeria, the Muslim extremist group Boko Haram has murdered more than 500 Christians in 2012 alone by blowing up churches, burning down churches, even slashing their throats. When you can get away with it, you do.

But then look at Muslims in western nations, where their religions are not able to go hog-wild. They tend to be nice people because the way they practice their religion has been largely secularized. It doesn't matter what religion you're talking about, it matters where that religion and it's believers is based.

It's not your run of the mill suburban christian that is the threat, it's the ones that get into political power and authority like happens in islamic societies. But don't fool yourself, if that were to happen many christians would turn their head and make like it wasn't happening because the tyrants were part of the tribe...and anyone opposing them aren't.

You might not be living in it, but you're thinking it.

BTW - Thanks for admitting christians acted the same way, there were stake burnings for heretics up until the late 1800's. It was the advent of things like the US Contsitution that put an end to those atrocities.

you must not mock anybody without having enough knowledge about him.

It isn't the individual theist who is a problem, but when the lunatic comes up for a vote and demands that God wants everyone to vote for him, you're going to get a lot of people voting that way, just because they think they're supposed to. Anything that stops a person from acting rationally or intelligently considering a proposition is a problem.

turkey is a secular country but you had claimed we had the highest murder rates in the world.interesting.

While Turkey might be the most secular nation in the Muslim world, it isn't really a secular nation. Turks are routinely prosecuted for speaking out against Islam, there have been several recently who have been jailed for Tweeting things that are “insulting to Islam."

Secular nations don't do that.

you have to prove your claim ....

Cephus, in Africa there is an enormous amount of wholesale slaughter going on for all kinds of reasons, including tribal affliation as a big one. This is a poor comparison.

I mean, really. People can mock Jesus with giddy abandon, so should Muhammed be an exception? Not all liberals do this, but some of the more progressive ones seem (imho) to mock Jesus a lot, yet the Prophet is off-limits. What's up with that?

Some have even taken it so far that in Denmark you can't even ridicule Muhammed, or other deities.

As an atheist, I don't believe in gods, titans, devils, etc. Mocking religion can be tasteless, but it shouldn't be wrong to do so.

What do you think? Is Muhammed more of a sacred cow than Jesus? Is it off limits to mock Islam because we should be afraid that we'll get killed?

Say what ya like. Who cares what some dumbass thinks. If they dont like it, too bad.

And religion is another big one, like it or not.

Mock away. It don't bother me none.

Hell, I get mocked all the time. Why should anyone else get a free ride?

I admit, your totally unrelated and completely out of place remark was one I had not fully considered.
