Why Does Religious People Attack Atheist?

Patriotism cannot be defined by one person. We can be patriotic in any way we choose. Paying taxes is a big one obviously. Baking cookies in the shape of Obama's giant ego is another... you cant tell someone that the way they choose to show their patrotism is wrong however.
And did I tell anyone how to show their patriotism? I gave an opinion not a command, just has you have gave your opinion on the matter. Your opinion is not more patiotic than mine nor is mine more patiotic than yours. In fact we are both patriotic which is a good thing and we should rejoice in our patriotism instead of arguing about it.

I thought i was agreeing with you... Sheesh

You hit the issue on the head there. The pledge doesnt mean jack **** to you, yet it means a whole lot to me. Should we get rid of it, since it means nothing to you, or should we keep it because it has meaning to me? The same can be said to the theological debate. Its hard to find 2 people in a room of 10 that agree on everything. Its impossible for 200 million Americans to go about their daily lives without offending someone. We cant take away from peoples rights, (atheist or theist) simply to TRY to avoid offending someone. And when you get right down to it, i think thats the problem. People are offended when they see things they dont agree with. When Atheists see christians doing christian things they are offended because it flies in the face of what they believe in, and vice versa when a religious person is told by an atheist that they cannot do something that is part of their belief structure. Until we learn to live together nobobdy is a winner here.

I completely agree. We should not get rid of it at all and I have never stated that we should. The Pledge is fine. It should not be mandatory though nor should those that don't want to say it be viewed as less patriotic towards their nation (meaning the ideas that it represents) or the people in it.

The idea of offense is foreign to me in the context that you provide, though you hit the issue on the head their perfectly. A guy could be preacing on the corner (as I just passed a guy) and that is fine. Prayer could be allowed at lunch in school and that should be fine. I am an agnostic atheist and have no problem with those that want to practice religion and be peaceful and love thy neighbor.

People are offended when they see things they don't agree with? True. More specifically though, people are AFRAID when they are confronted with things that they don't agree with because most of the time they do not understand what they do not agree with.

Fear is the root of most confrontation.

The only hate that goes around is not from those of the group but by the individuals themselves. No atheists do not hate theists and theists do not hate atheists. The individual who cannot handle the concept that another person thinks differently than them does. What group they belong to is irrelevant.

i think that its actually the opposite.

Most Christians believe themselves to be the majority of Americans. Logically a majority has more assholes demographically, so there would be more Christians attacking Atheists than Atheists attacking Christians.

But the attacks boil down to two concepts:
  • Atheists think that Christains lack intelectual fortitude to see things logical as presented from the study of the natural world.
  • Christains see Atheists as being fooled by Satan and the agents of Satan. Christains can never trust Atheists and believe that they are too stupid to realize they are going to hell. And the existence of Atheists threatens society and must be delt with.
