Brings back memories of long ago!

A bunch of us kids would load up in the old 1963 Chevy pick (The red bomb) up and head to the drive in theater.
Don't remember what it cost but it had to be cheap because we did not have much money.

We would arrive early so we could get a spot in the middle. Pull the truck in with the tale gate pointed towards
the big screen. Drop the tail gate Spread out the sleeping bags. Set up the speaker from the pole. Get the goodies
out. Usually we brought our snacks but once in a while we splurged with movie pop corn. Anxiously wait for darkness.....

Nothing but great memories!

Thanks for the thread nota

Not sure Jim Gaffigan is the first comedian to do this, but drive-in entertainment might be the way to go for the foreseeable future.

i'd totally go to a drive in even if it's Walmart. kudos to them for doing something fun.

I dont think Ive been to a drive in since the late 70s as a little kid. I have a home theater in my living room (huge flat screen, comfy couches and upgraded sound system) and we're good with it. Streaming is the future anyway, pretty much all major movie releases in the past few months have been put out on the net already.

Growing up, my cousins lived next to a drive-in. Can remember climbing on their roof, watching The Shining and wondering what the heck they were saying.

I can remember as a young teen a few friends and I discovered a rural road behind a drive-in that you could pull over and watch.

We thought it was so cool being able to see the movie for free.

But without the sound it soon got boring. I just remember after a few minutes we just looked at each other and said "Nah".

That announcer's voice brings back memories.

I can never remember seeing pickles advertised. Must be a regional thing.

Must be. I don't either.

What I remember are the ads with the numbers count-down. And my parents would never go to the snack bar, so the only glimpse my little sister and I saw of it was when we had use the bathroom. We were always agog because there were teenagers hanging around! Very exciting!

We had a real drive in theater until about 5-6 years ago. Technically the we was this small town south of us but lots of us city folks frequented it. It didn't really make money but the owner refused to close it until he died. It was a fun time unless you went actually wanting to watch the movies.

One of the things that killed drive-in movies was that there was too much exterior lighting going up around them. If Walmart leaves their parking lot security lighting on, you won't be able to see the screen. Even if they turn those off, Walmarts are usually built in areas that don't get dark at night.

The COVID-19 pandemic is sparking a return to drive-in movies, and a generation that has never had this experience now has the opportunity. Even Walmart is part of the trend, offering pop-up drive-ins in 160 of their parking lots across the nation.

Drive-in movie theaters' coronavirus comeback: Stay safe and have fun

This is a great idea! I dont know why they did away with drive in movies to begin with! They were mostly before my time, although there was one not far from here that stuck it out to the late 80s. But i missed it.

Yeah, that makes sense. I guess the drive in movies in the 50s and 60s were probably set on large open properties, with no other businesses next door, or even right across the street. Werent there like daytime drive in matinees too though?

The worst is having lighted businesses, or street lights that are behind the screen yet visible above and beside it.

I'm quite sure that drive-in movies were never run when the sun was up.

I would love to see this happen again. I saw several movies at the drive in when I was a kid.

Oh yeah, they required darkness! Duh...
