"Antebellum" means "before the war," but it wasn't widely associated with the U.S. Civil War (1861-1865) until after that conflict was over. The word comes from the Latin phrase "ante bellum" (literally, "before the war"), and its earliest known print appearance in English dates back to the 1840s.
-----------

I never even knew what Antebellum meant before. How does the term 'before the war' become associated with slavery? Is anything associated with the Civil War automatically negative?

Calling your band the 'Antebellum South' (also known as the antebellum era or plantation era), I can see as possibly more controversial.

Lady Antebellum changes name in support of Black Lives Matter movement

--Lady Antebellum says it needs that name no more.

The country-pop trio - which won Record and Song of the Year Grammys for the 2009 smash "Need You Now" - have renounced the name that fans have known since Charles Kelley, Dave Haywood and Hillary Scott joined forces in 2006.

The trio broke down on Twitter just why - in the wake of George Floyd's death in police custody and the Black Lives Matter movement that has intensified in its wake - it is changing its name.

The country band Lady Antebellum has changed its name to Lady A - saying its members are "regretful and embarrassed" that they hadn't previously considered the term's association with slavery. --

I can't eyeroll hard enough for this. The A means what now?

That's like Kat Von D's makeup brand tanking after her stupid comments, her leaving the company and them changing the name to KVD Beauty, but saying the KVD stands for "Kindness, Vegan and Discovery". LOL!

I don't get this, it's weird, right?

The A means 'antislavery', I guess.

Hmm... wait until they discover the A-bomb. ;)

The A means that a google search of youtube and Lady A still works just fine.

Lady Antifa?

This is what comes of taking Latin out of the high school curriculum. Antebellum is hardly an obscure term.

I don’t think I’ve ever heard antebellum ever used to mean anything but the antebellum south.

Not sure why they’re upset about it now.

I always thought it was a stupid name. It's an honorific followed by a time period. It's a non-sequitur. Why not Lord Bronze Age?

Really? She named herself "Lady Antebellum", but we are to believe that she didnt know what the word meant? Is anyone really buying that nonsense!? This is an example of feigned ignorance of yet another ultra-wealthy celebrity, for the purpose of saving her own ass from the angry, intolerant mob! Its just the type of shallow, superficial, but ultimately meaningless fluff that changes absolutely nothing, but makes certain white people "feel good"(while doing nothing for the black community).

Its little different from the "news" media's newest feigned outrage, "Trump's refusal to change the name of a military base". Again, changing the name accomplishes literally NOTHING to bring back George Floyd, or to stop the (rare)cases of police violence!

Its just another bulls**t political ploy to shame or demonize Trump, who literally bears NO responsibility for police misconduct in Minnesota or Michigan! If the media actually and truthfully cared about "black lives", they'd be criticizing the political party who run most of the cities where this stuff happens, while DEMANDING to know what they are going to do about it!

But as we know, the "news" media have obfuscated ALL blame and criticism AWAY from the democrats who run these cities, PROVING that they DON'T think that "black lives matter". To the media, its not BLM, its DNC that matters!

This is what comes of taking Latin out of the high school curriculum. Antebellum is hardly an obscure term.

Latin has been a dead language for over 1400 yrs, it's obscure.

I never even knew what Antebellum meant before. How does the term 'before the war' become associated with slavery?

How can anyone who has watched arguably the most popular movie of all time - Gone With The Wind - not understand what the Antebellum south is about?

I read your post earlier, then rushed down to the local government office to change my name, before anyone else would have time to do it! But while standing in line, i realized you were being sarcastic, and that changing my name to "Lord Bronze Age" just may seem really, really laughable and idiotic to most people....

So i decided to do the logical thing.... But i was already standing in front of the desk of the gov't official lady, who was now asking, "can i help you"? I made a quick decision, the RIGHT decision..... I changed my name to "Grand Duke Iron Age"!

So, I didn't know what Antebellum meant. Do you really claim to know the meaning of every obscure word?

Everyone's sensibility is aflame with righteous indignation for moral clarity. Otherwords, they're full of **** phony.

I don’t think you need to know Latin to work the meaning of antebellum. Ante is a common prefix in English - antecedent etc - and bellum is found in all kinds words that connote conflict - bellicose, rebellion, belligerent etc.

Totally OT but a dead language is just one where there are no native speakers. That doesn’t mean that it still isn’t used. There are plenty people who speak Latin as a second language, including outside the RC Church, with varying degrees of facility and many more with an interest in classics or Ancient Rome who actively read it.

I just never gave it a thought about what Antibellum meant, didn't care.

Latin may still be used somewhat in a religious context, and not as dead as Aramaic, but it is not commonly used by a people.

It's the source of a whole lot of the words in the language you're speaking right now.

Sooooooooo, Prince Dark Ages is still available????

it's funny, i was thinking about this today when i was driving home from work. in the antebellum south (and in parts of the north,) human beings were treated like farm animals. i've heard some of their songs, and they are good, but i wouldn't have chosen that for a band name. i wonder how many people will throw a hissy and stop listening to them now.

Lunacy abounds!! I wonder how many people on the street could actually define "antebellum". We've gone mad! :screwy

It's the source of a whole lot of the words in the language you're speaking right now.

So is French and German. Latin's also the source for a lot of the romantic languages that doesn't make it any less dead.
