Well I guess there is no denying his commitment to his craft

'Mad' Mike Hughes dies after crash-landing homemade rocket - BBC News

A US daredevil pilot has been killed during an attempted launch of a homemade rocket in the Californian desert.

"Mad" Mike Hughes, 64, crash-landed his steam-powered rocket shortly after take-off near Barstow on Saturday.

A video on social media shows a rocket being fired into the sky before plummeting to the ground nearby.

Hughes was well-known for his belief that the Earth was flat. He hoped to prove his theory by going to space.

That is very sad. I feel very sorry for the man's family. Rest in Peace Mr. Hughes.

Well, I suppose as ways to die go, death by homemade rocket crash is pretty epic.

Yep, from space you can clearly see the edges of the Earth. ;)

Lol, that he was able to design even a semi-functional rocket shows he was dramatically smarter than the average flat earther.

All he had to do was turn off the porn and look out at the window at night.

If the shadow's edge is round every time then one has to deduce that the only solid that always projects a round shadow is a sphere.

The dude puts real meaning to the phrase: stupid is as stupid does.

What part of a person's brain has to be missing to think the earth is flat?

Fool! Obviously the earth can't be flat. It's hollow, and an advanced civilization lives on the inside surface. There's a hidden opening in Anarctica where the UFO's come out and go back in.

He deserves a lifelong Darwin Award.

rest in peace.

There will be 2 very different viewpoints in response to this tragedy:

A). Yet another hero dies in the grand quest of scientific discovery.
B). Misguided fool attempts an irresponsible and wreckless stunt, and meets his fate, in an inevitably fruitless endeavor.

Either way it's a shame the guy killed himself, regardless of the fact that it's option B that most accurately describes the situation.

Most of the parts.

Or.......A person could still be in possession of most of the parts, but the majority of what's there has been scrambled in a botched lobotomy. There are 2 equally stupid ideas. 1. Flat Earth,. 2. Lobotomies

Well...lets face it...the big story here is how a guy who believes the earth is flat made it to 64 in the first place!

He had a small team of rocket enthusiasts that did the vast bulk of the design and helped assemble it. There is a documentary about him called Rocketman which is pretty interesting.

No! The UFOs GO IN to the Antartica hole and COME BACK OUT. Everyone knows that.

It's unfortunate that he died, but I guess it goes to show that rocket science is indeed tough.

Did he not believe in gravity either? Even if he thought the earth was flat and if he could get to space that would give him the evidence he needs (which is nuts). Did he really think steam could provide the amount of thrust needed to escape gravitational pull of the earth?

Careful and intelligent people do not believe the Earth is flat.

Same with the anti-vaxxers and anti-AGW crowd. To actually believe that stuff requires an unthinking embrace of ignorance and arrogance. If you don't unthinkingly embrace ignorance or arrogance, you realize it is idiotic to announce that people who have spent their lives studying something have gotten it all wrong and that YOU, being sufficiently special, happen to know the real answer simply by.......thinking of it.

I am not surprised that he thought his little journey might work. The level of idiocy and arrogance required to believe the Earth flat is staggering.
