In 1983-84, both Madonna and Cyndi Lauper emerged on the national stage. Most thought Lauper was the bigger star at the time with the her 1984 7x platinum super album "She's So Unusual", which had four Billboard Top 5 songs, a record for a female artist. Madonna had the hugely Successful "Like A Virgin" in late 1984 which slightly edged Lauper's album in sales.

Lauper is considered more of an artist, being a far superior singer with a four-octave range and the better stage performer. It was Lauper, not Madonna selected for the "We are the World" album. It was said project producers feared Madonna's weak voice would be exposed in a solo effort against all the accomplished singers in WATW. Cyndi dominated in her brief segment. Lauper in my view was also the more attractive of the two, once you peeled away the crazy hair, makeup and jewelry.

But Madonna was more business-savvy which was why she has outsold Lauper six to one. She reinvented herself numerous times, and exploited sex as well. She was the superior marketer, where Lauper just wanted to make her own music, and was unconcerned about superstardom. Madonna has made the most of her spare looks and talent, there is no question. Lauper, though highly successful, somewhat underachieved. Madonna embraced controversy for record sales. Lauper, other than her song She-Bop, was uncontroversial. Madonna's look was also easier for young girls to emulate than Lauper's. She portrayed herself a sultry vixen, whereas Lauper was kind of thought of as quirky and cute.

This might be a somewhat silly topic. Not every earth shaking. But what the hell? Not everything has to be political, does it?

Your view?

Here is the "Girl Just Want to Have Fun" performance on Johnny Carson, that Lauper credits for putting her one the map. To me, it's amazing she could sing that well while moving around that much:

I have no "detailed" explanation.

I liked Cyndi Lauper, but I just liked Madonna more.

I grew up listening to music and watching performers from the 50's on. But before the 80's even rolled around, my musical appreciation had grown more discriminating. Because of this, I wasn't all that impressed with either Cindy Lauper or Madonna. Oh...don't get me wrong, they were both very talented and accomplished, but around that time, I was more into the likes of Kate Bush who, by the way, paved the way so that other talented women could make it doing their own styles.

If I HAD to choose, though, my nod would go to Madonna. I don't think Cindy Lauper could have pulled off the performance of Evita, as Madonna did.

One of my very favorite Kate Bush songs/videos.

Madonna would only win in a comparison between two women if the other choice was Hillary Clinton...

she is that detestable.

So sure, I would pick Cindi Lauper. But that voice thing she has rivals Fran Dresher.... if you could only turn her voice off.

I like two songs from Madonna and one from Cyndi Lauper.

Not a resounding victory (pun intended), but Madonna wins by a song.

Madonna is intellectual. Lauper is emotional. There's a couple nice songs from each.

As far as sexy goes, Material Girl video. End of that discussion.

I never saw Evita. Cyndi acted in a couple things. Minor parts I think.

i don't get Madonna or her music being intellectual. I agree Cyndi's stuff is emotional. It's art. Her performances are art.

Well, although I like some of Madonna's songs, i can't stand her personally. I hate everything she stands for. I particularly disliked her use of the Catholic Church as another marketing prop. She once said if she weren't a singer, she'd have been a nun. I wanted to vomit. Neither of these women is a picnic, politically. But Madonna is profane about it, especially her remarks about Trump. But again with her, you always wonder if everything is marketing.

Cyndi doesn't really play games. She is what she is.

That shocks no one.

I doubt it if others know what you mean either. Could you explain?

I've heard a number of serious interviews of Lauper, and she's extremely witty and funny. And that denotes intelligence. A lot of her stuff is tongue-in-cheek. The interviews she did with Carson early on were clearly kitsch. She was posing as kind of a ditzy girl from Queens. She's far from ditzy.

Is the point to pick artist or a personality screen?

Madonna simply has a better body of work. No question. But Cindi was awesome.

Yes, there is no question Madonna has been more successful. Madonna simply has a better body of work. No question. But Cindi was awesome.

Yes, Madonna has clearly been more successful. I guess the point is to pick whom you like better, either in terms of music, talent, or persona. It doesn't have to be based on anything other than what you think.

Good thing for you just deleted that last post.

Why don't you offer a comment about the OP? Who do you prefer, Cyndi or Madonna?

Why don't you explain why in one post you declare you never demean females, then in another post you refer to a young female teenager as a 'creepy piglet' ?

Moderator's Warning:
This is not the topic. Move on.

This is why Cyndi is the far greater singer and live performer.

Honestly, there are a few more Madonna songs that i find half-decent. From that perspective id choose Madonna. But her music isnt that good, and her awful personality and character made it impossible for me to vote for her! So I voted for Cyndi instead.... Madonna is just a rotten, narcissistic, superficial human being, with no redeeming value IMO.
