In 1983-84, both Madonna and Cyndi Lauper emerged on the national stage. Most thought Lauper was the bigger star at the time with the her 1984 7x platinum super album "She's So Unusual", which had four Billboard Top 5 songs, a record for a female artist. Madonna had the hugely Successful "Like A Virgin" in late 1984 which slightly edged Lauper's album in sales.
Lauper is considered more of an artist, being a far superior singer with a four-octave range and the better stage performer. It was Lauper, not Madonna selected for the "We are the World" album. It was said project producers feared Madonna's weak voice would be exposed in a solo effort against all the accomplished singers in WATW. Cyndi dominated in her brief segment. Lauper in my view was also the more attractive of the two, once you peeled away the crazy hair, makeup and jewelry.
But Madonna was more business-savvy which was why she has outsold Lauper six to one. She reinvented herself numerous times, and exploited sex as well. She was the superior marketer, where Lauper just wanted to make her own music, and was unconcerned about superstardom. Madonna has made the most of her spare looks and talent, there is no question. Lauper, though highly successful, somewhat underachieved. Madonna embraced controversy for record sales. Lauper, other than her song She-Bop, was uncontroversial. Madonna's look was also easier for young girls to emulate than Lauper's. She portrayed herself a sultry vixen, whereas Lauper was kind of thought of as quirky and cute.
This might be a somewhat silly topic. Not every earth shaking. But what the hell? Not everything has to be political, does it?

Here is the "Girl Just Want to Have Fun" performance on Johnny Carson, that Lauper credits for putting her one the map. To me, it's amazing she could sing that well while moving around that much:
