It's official. More people prefer older songs than newer ones.

like you (or I assume by your username) I don't always get my queues from the pop charts. I didn't mention bands like Tiger Army, because nobody would know what I was talking about.

Or a singer like Banners who never charted with "Someone to You" which I thought was an outstanding song.

So I see where you're coming from - there are some good bands and artists these days but the majority of the current hits on the pop charts aren't worth listening to, or mediocre at best.

Main reason for my user name is my party affiliation is independent and I'm disgusted with both major political parties, but I do like a fair share of indie music - depending on who or what it is of course.

then you thought wrong :)

There are some new bands like imagine dragons, X ambassadors, lots of great newer metal, arctic monkeys, black keys, white stripes, celldweller, kidney thieves, KMFDM (is still going strong), etc

Plenty of good music to go around these days.

OK, I'll randomly post a song here for comparative purposes. I say "randomly", because I haven't actually tried to come up with any pre-millennium songs that are better than most or all post-2000 songs.

I just happened to be looking up Queensryche songs from the mid 80s to early 90s, and I was reminded of several songs of theirs that were really good. The obvious(overplayed) choice would be "Silent Lucidity", but I decided to post a slightly lesser known song, and ask if you can honestly think of even a few songs from the past 10-15 years that are as good as this 1 song.

When I say "good", I mean it's got everything. It's melodic, catchy, well played and produced, and the individual band members are top notch musicians, including their lead singer(Geoff Tate), who very well may have had the best voice in metal, and definitely in the top 10 of ALL musical genres.

There are a few good songs by Imagine Dragons and X Ambassadors, especially "Believer" and "Renegades". I was actually surprised they became decent-sized hits.

The others you mentioned are so-so, not bad but nothing really outstanding I've really heard yet.

It's pretty rare to see bands like these on the pop singles chart other than maybe a few token hits. Aside from that and the older Christmas singles to chart high during the holiday season, it's mostly made up of the mediocre to bad pop stuff like Justin Bieber, Halsey, and Ariana Grande, or the awful rap-trap-crap. I wouldn't call that good music by any stretch.

Hey, I like Halsey and you can't deny Halsey, Ariana Grande, or even the Biebs do not have amazing voices - I only dream I could sing like them. Sure, they might not sing what you like but you can't deny they don't have talent.

I realize it all comes down to personal choice but I can't stand to listen to Halsey or Ariana. Bieber is mediocre at best. His "I Don't Care" collaboration with Ed Sheeran isn't bad.

There are plenty of singers with amazing voices that blow Halsey away in terms of talent - many from the past and even some from recent years who weren't recognized much by the media or the younger crowd.

I'll give you an example of this. The band Disturbed did an absolutely outstanding cover of "Sound of Silence" a few years ago which I think was even better than the S&G original. It got airplay on rock-oriented outlets but hardly any spins on pop stations, and only reached #42 on the singles chart - should have been #1 easily.

There are a lot of new music, you just don't find the best on the toplists.

Most new music is either garbage, forgettable, or forgettable garbage.
I would not be quite so harsh - but you are right in most cases.

Rock music are doing just fine. That you just might to find it in new places like Asia.

Yep I agree I prefer listening to music from decades ago like the Bach, Beathoven, Mozart, Beatles, Elvis, Don Mclean, Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash, The Kingston Trio, etc. The same is true with books. I think some of the best books ever written were the classics: The Great Gatsby, Animal Farm, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, For Whom the Bell Tolls, The Count of Monte Cristo, Moby Dick, War and Peace, Dr. Shivago, etc. The newer novels released are good but they just at least me don't seem as good as the books that have withstood the test of time. I guess the same applies to Music, the best music is music that people still listen to decade after decade.
