It's official. More people prefer older songs than newer ones.

The only "reality" shows I can watch are COPS and Live PD. I used to enjoy Top Shot but I don't think it's on any more. I guess I just have a problem where the outcome is primarily subjective.

I used to watch a number of reality shows. Now, I'm streaming probably 90% of shows. Not including cable news.

Pretty much any artist, band, or song prior to the year 2000, or before 1990 in my opinion. A large share of the population - young and old - feels the same way. You might be an exception.

If you only knew.... if you only knew.

Let me just say, this is inane. Totally ridiculous.

Peace brother.

OK, I'll go with it.

Rap is the worst. I once posted a quote of rap lyrics on another forum, just quoted them mind you, added nothing, and got in trouble for having posted offensive material. That's how bad those lyrics are, not that they're understandable anyway. Oh, I get an occasional N word, or that word that implies an oedipal complex, but that's about it.

Compare that to "All you need is love," or "Don't you step on my blue suede shoes," and the conclusion is obvious.

No joke, I laughed and laughed at this.

peace brother.

'cept when it comes to Dolly Pardon. Play her at my funeral and I'll get up and haunt you. Forever

Workin 9 to 5
What a way to make a livin,
Barely gettin by
Its takin
And no givin,
They just use your mind
And they never give you credit,
Its enough to drive you
Crazy if you let it,

Everybody join in. :)

If I had to chose from that long ago I'd go just a bit further bach (sorry, couldn't help it!) to the Baroque period. I put my speakers in the kids room and played the Brandenburg Concertos while they napped.

Fave recording of them? Mine's Trevor Pinnock and the English Concert because they're played on early instruments. Or Academy of St.-Martin's-in-the-Field?

I can't find it. I had a five record set of J S Bach, the Brandenburg Concertos, and I looked through those milk crates full of old vinyl and it's gone. There was a Vivaldi in there that's gone too. Makes me wonder what else has fallen by the wayside.
I got to like that Baroque music when I was always off to some camp job or motel job and I found that Bach played low made sleeping alone in a strange bed easier. I liked the sound of the harpsichord and how the rhythm seemed to be in circles, kind of. Not rhythm, exactly, but the music seems to come around again. I'm no musician so I can't explain it.
When my son was born I got the idea that kids might sleep better with it too, and since then I've read that classical or baroque music helps brain development during sleep.

Babies respond to classical music in utero too.

I've never thought of Bach's rhythm seeming to be in circles, but I'm wondering if what you're responding to is that so frequently, the bass or "harmony" instruments repeat the main "melody"?

What's really interesting is how each decade has its distinctive sound. I really like Jimmie Rodgers. I remember how much my Grandparents enjoyed his music.

This one is jarring to think about what life was like before tuberculosis was cured.

I own an Edison Amberola and really enjoy this selection.

I'm also a Gen-Xer and I agree wholeheartedly. It goes back to what I said about lack of talent and limited effort these days.

Seems like they don't even need any knowledge of how to play instruments - just use a few pre-programmed beats and chords, then slap it all together to make an album. Drake can't even sing - he mostly mumbles, and somehow he's one of the best-selling artists of the last decade.
:(

There are some talented singers and bands out there right now but most of them aren't found at the top of the pop chart, or even on the chart at all. Lately if I listen to anything new or current, it's usually something along the lines of indie or alternative. Even that genre can be hit & miss at best. I've found that Mumford & Sons and Coldplay are 2 relatively current bands I can listen to most of the time and not be disappointed - and I say most of the time because even they put out some songs that I'm not crazy about.

Pop, top 40, rap, and modern country - that could describe "Old Town Road" which set a record for longevity at #1 this last year and was downloaded & streamed at record numbers. How that could qualify as good music is beyond me.

I won't listen to anything that tries to sway me politically one way or the other. Music should be fun and great to listen to without having to being indoctrinated.

On that note I absolutely can't stand most rap, especially now with what they're calling trap. Almost all recent rap or hip-hop that I've heard is nothing but profanity-laced, racially-charged trash, and the rappers themselves are pure trash. Even without the profanity and racism, that so-called music still sounds awful.

I remember hoping that I wouldnt eventually grow old and "square", to where I would sound like an elderly person in the 70s or 80s, complaining about "that loud rock music that you young people listen to". I hoped that I'd remain somewhat "hip" to new music as I got older.

But now I see it VERY differently! I DO dislike newer music, but not for the same reasons as with previous generations. I don't dislike it because it's "too loud" or "too harsh". It dislike it because it's objectively terrible! Lol..

It turns out that I wear my hatred of most modern popular music as a badge of honor! I couldn't be more proud of my position on this subject, because for the 1st time in rock history, the generational roles have reversed... Now, it's the OLDER generations whose music was "cool", and the newer generations whose music is uncool! Too ironic.

Very true.

Growing up in the 1980s, I had Bon Jovi and Aerosmith playing pretty loud in the house, as well as the softer rock by Journey and Chicago. My parents would always be telling me to turn down the stereo.

That isn't so much of an issue these days since practically everyone has wires in their ears, and there hasn't been very much "rock" music recorded in the last decade - let alone the hard rock or hair bands that we listened to. Even Green Day hasn't put out very much that's worth a crap lately and they've lost popularity because of it.

Rock and roll already had its heyday, which was mainly 1950s through 1980s, and into the 1990s to a lesser extent with punk revival and grunge.

America was introduced to rap music around 1979 with Sugarhill Gang, and what limited rap there was in the 1980s wasn't too bad. When it became gangsta and thuggish is when it took a downhill turn, and these days it's just plain horrible.

This whole thread is like a grumpy old people convention.

When MTV first came out, my mom used to say "Good Lord, those women would rather show their ass than their face." followed by "It looks like they're having a fit."

When my dad saw a glimpse of MTV around 1983ish, he called it a teenage opera.

The only thing I liked about MTV was headbangers ball.

Can you honestly say that you prefer music made in the past 10-15 years, as opposed to music from before that? Yeah.... I didn't think so..

I actually liked MTV in the late 80s and early to mid 90's. I liked Headbanger's Ball too though.

then you thought wrong :)

There are some new bands like imagine dragons, X ambassadors, lots of great newer metal, arctic monkeys, black keys, white stripes, celldweller, kidney thieves, KMFDM (is still going strong), etc

Plenty of good music to go around these days.

There are a few good songs by Imagine Dragons and X Ambassadors, especially "Believer" and "Renegades". I was actually surprised they became decent-sized hits.

The others you mentioned are so-so, not bad but nothing really outstanding I've really heard yet.

It's pretty rare to see bands like these on the pop singles chart other than maybe a few token hits. Aside from that and the older Christmas singles to chart high during the holiday season, it's mostly made up of the mediocre to bad pop stuff like Justin Bieber, Halsey, and Ariana Grande, or the awful rap-trap-crap. I wouldn't call that good music by any stretch.

like you (or I assume by your username) I don't always get my queues from the pop charts. I didn't mention bands like Tiger Army, because nobody would know what I was talking about.

Also, don't be an elitist, art is in the eye of the beholder and nothing is objectively better than anything else. People who like Ariana Beiber are just fine too.
