I am trying to do something different with the walls in my kitchen. Have been in the middle of a remodel ever since before Hubs went into the hospital, and now I am stuck with a half-finished kitchen and too much time on my hands.

At first, I wanted to put old antique maps up on the wall - above the chair rail, and then paint below the chair rail. Problem is that I can't find a lot of maps that look the way I want them to (older, kind of brownish, aged). So then I started thinking about maybe newspapers.

The old lady I bought the house from has tons and tons of newspapers, and most of them, even the JAPAN SURRENDERS ones are not really worth anything, because everybody saves newspapers.

What do y'all think? If I can't do the maps, I can do newspapers but don't want it to look stupid.

I would take care in the kitchen to use easy to clean wall coverings. It might be best to put someting like that on one "accent" wall, but preferably one that is mostly out of harms way. I have seen this entire wall as a mural (using wallpaper) in some homes that I have worked in and it looked a bit odd but OK.

Hve you simply tried wood panels finished with boiled linseed oil, it is a long task but it looks amazing and antique as blo was the most common stain over 100 years ago before poly satin oil based etc hit the markets. If you have even seen gun oil based stain it is based of blo, as guns going back to the 1500's were finished with it all the way up to the vietnam war, it is very elegant and antique looking, and can still be bought at home depot or lowes vs buying old maps or newspapers.

Another going fancy would be shellac as that form of stain dated back just as far as blo in europe, and is very good for the nice luxory look.

Would something like this work? 17th Century Wallpaper | Historical Map Design | MuralsWallpaper

I love that. Love the sepia tone. I was hoping for a bunch of individual maps of countries, states, etc, but it’s so hard to find them all in the same shading.

and yeah behind the stove is going to be like backsplash. This is more for accent walls.

No, too much wood. My cabinets are wood, my floor is wood. Trying to spice it up a little and get a break from all the dark brown.

boiled lineed oil does not make it dark brown unless the wood is naturally that color, it only slightly tints natural wood color.

I love that but it’s kind of bright and colorful. Was looking for something old and aged. Trying to decorate the kitchen as like old world style, old Italian kitchen or old Mexican kitchen. Something like that.

Old italian or mexican kitchens are the most bright and colorful of all, both those nations love using fruity colors for everything and have for a very long time, sounds more like you want a classic european style kitchen.

Could be. Just like earthy tones, and old world style. Maybe little splashes of red. Like I have a window seat with red cushions on it.

Newspapers are not stupid. There are lots of people out there that frame vintage photographs, posters, art, and maps to decorate their home. Ebay is full of that stuff.

There are plenty of maps you could get from the public domain, or you can just buy one that's already been touched up by an Ebay seller in Photoshop.

The keyword to stick with is "vintage" when searching for the kind of thing you're looking for.

Yup, that's just what it is, 1950's Italian restaurant kitsch. Maps of Italy and or Sicily, with and without bullet holes.

There's a not so well known restaurant in the second arrondissement of Paris where the glitterati have been hanging out since the early 1890's. The walls behind the tables situated close to the walls were once decorated with maps of the wine regions of Europe. All were removed over time except the one with bullet holes from the assassination of a Bulgarian diplomat during 1927. It is the most desired table. The food is nothing to get excited about, mostly charcuterie (sausage, mustard and sauerkraut), but the spirits of Camus, Sartre, Isadora Duncan, Marie Pellot, Edith Piaf, Josephine Baker, among many others, permeate the place. An autographed photo of the very young Louis Armstrong adorns the ancient cash register. No one remembers the name of the diplomat other than he was having an affair with the wife of a very jealous diplomat from the Hungarian legation. Amour d'Paris. I ate stinky cheese, ate a small baguette and got drunk on cheap table wine one rainy autumn afternoon. One of the worst hangovers of my life. :)

There should be methods out there to "age" paper. And then once you have it up, you need to find some kind of clear coat that will seal it to the wall, so that you can clean without ruining the paper. Or make a giant framed picture. The newspapers are a great idea as well, but against you need the clear coat. And as an idea if you go with the newspapers, cut out articles to stay together or make sure the pages are near each other I think key articles cut and together along with classic ads would look great.

I helped a lady do something like this to her living room at her condo down at the beach a few years ago.

Like what? Can’t do anything heavy like glass. Plexiglass will cloud over time.

Like maybe a heavy polyurethane or something? I was thinking the same thing. I was looking at wallpaper glue, but it dries as a milky glaze.

Oh my gosh. MP, those are actually perfect. It even gives me the option to choose the ones I want. I need to find a local printer. Thank you!

That’s fabulous! South Florida and the islands. I love that.

I have always been fascinated by maps. Probably because when we were kids, we were really poor and never got to go anywhere.

I like the general idea but, personally, think a wall of full page newspaper print will be too "busy". Walls need blank space to really make any graphics on them "pop". If you want to give it a shot just take a sheet of drywall, decoupage on the newspaper, see how it looks and then go over it with random brush strokes of a heavy paint, leaving portions of the newspaper exposed, to kind of get the effect that the newspaper had been on the wall and then was plastered over. That way you can highlight certain headlines and images while still having a recognizable wall.

Agreed. I'm big on "easy" including easy maintenance and clean up.

Some of those newspapers are definitely collector's items. A one "accent" painted kitchen can be covered with several of those headlines framed (wait for a sale at Hobby Lobby in January) for decorations. Easy to hang and easy to move. Best of all, easy to clean.

I did all the wall prep for the lady, and she taught me how to hang the paper correctly.

I'm not sure how successful you'd be pasting newspapers on a kitchen wall then keeping it clean. Newspaper is the low end of paper quality meant to be used once and thrown away, and double sided at that. I would think the bleed would be a problem.

You can buy newsprint patterned wallpaper. Probably a better choice.
