Got my first permanent salaried job

The only thing I am not looking forward to is the awkward conversation with my current manager that I will be ending my contract early at the busiest time of year for the company with the required two weeks notice.

Why awkward?
The company could have KEPT you if they wanted to badly enough. Their stupidity, their loss, **** em.
No, seriously.... **** THEM.
And that's how you should look at it.
Yes, it's a sucky thing to do to your team but in reality that team was led by someone too stupid to keep the likes of you permanently.
So, there's no awkwardness except on your boss' part, because it is your boss who should feel awkward for not inducing you to stick around.

Of course, I don't even know if that was really a job you wanted to stick with but no matter, the point is still the same, namely you are doing the right thing, pursuing a better opportunity. In reality your boss can choose to be upset AND happy for YOU at the same time if they want to be, but you should not feel the least bit awkward...at all, EVER...about leaving for a better job.
And your boss should write you a letter of recommendation even IF you ARE leaving without notice.

Like I said: **** 'em and feed 'em fish heads.

Congratulations to you and I hope you make a killing out there.

That is all illegal for an employer to do that here. Also marijuana is legal, they cannot take action against you for using it in your free time, not that I use it anyways.

What kind of companies are you working for that would require all that?

If I am not mistaken, they cannot hold pot use against you in California unless you're intoxicated on the job.
In some states however, like Texas, it's curtains for you if pot shows up in the test.

US companies try to push for things like that. It's best to push back. One of my favorite HR lines that caused me to lose interest in the employer: "YOUR retirement plan contributions vest immediately!" They were trying to sidestep that the employer match takes three years to vest. Are any candidates actually that stupid?

Fantastic, Carjosse. I am glad you were able to find a job that allows you to stay in your home province.

It is not my home province but it is where I want to stay.

On Friday I got a job offer for a permanent salaried position for a company I really wanted to work for and I didn't even actually apply for it. I graduated 6 months ago but all I found was an internship which I started last month but now I have this job offer. Comes with a really good salary (my rent will only be 18% of my income), vacation, health insurance, everything. The only thing I am not looking forward to is the awkward conversation with my current manager that I will be ending my contract early at the busiest time of year for the company with the required two weeks notice.

All of this because a recruiter messaged me out of blue on LinkedIn because he liked my profile. This was a surprise because usually the only messages I get are from sketchy telemarketing companies.

Congratulations.

Make sure you contribute to your 401K to at least the matching amount.

NEVER EVER accept a counter-offer. You'll be considered disloyal and damaged goods. You'll only be kept around long enough to train your replacement.

Why You Should Never Accept A Counter Offer When You Resign

Depends on the industry. In factory maintenance it happens a lot. Some places you’ll only ever get a decent raise by bringing another offer to the table. I’ll never train my replacement. I’ve travelled the world and made decent money because I know what few others do. Hell the Chinese even stole my laptop to get my documents. As if they mean anything without the experience.

But the key is not being replaceable. As I’ve told many operators over 20 years. If you can only do what the person next to you can, you don’t have any more value, and your demands for more will be viewed to arrogant.
